Grosta was an Atmoran warrior and a member of the original Five Hundred Companions. Along with her sister Froa, they were known as the great Shield-Sisters.[2] They were credited with the creation of the Woeful Bowstring, an essential part of Ysgramor's great bow, the Long-Launcher.[1]
History[edit]
Fragmentae Abyssum Hermaeus Morus, a legendary account of Ysgramor's deeds from the frozen continent of Atmora, speaks of Grosta. According to the text, Ysgramor gathered the laments of the Giant-Wives and brought them to Grosta and Froa. Together, the Shield-Sisters twisted the laments into the Woeful Bowstring, enabling Ysgramor to re-string his mighty bow, the Long-Launcher.[1] The bow served Ysgramor well, as he wielded it during his legendary hunt of the White Stag of Forelgrim,[1] the great Snow-Goose Faldrosta,[3] and in his battle against the ancient Snow Elf wizard named Serenarth.[4]
Volume two of the Songs of the Return also recounts the sisters. According to the text, Grosta and Froa were so close that they thought and spoke as one. They studied under the great warrior and wise war-teacher Adrimk, who first taught them to dance among the blades. Adrimk was a legendary warrior in her own right, shaping the Shield-Sisters into great fighters. Ylgar, son of Ysgramor, set forth to the academies of honored soldiers, seeking his most trusted friends and advisors to join him on the venture of the Return. In this way, he was able to gather many loyal allies, including Grosta and Froa, their teacher, and numerous other students of hers. Together, they manned Darumzu, one of the grand Atmoran ships, and successfully landed on the mainland of Tamriel.[2]
Nordic women continued to bear the name Grosta as late as 4E 201, though it is uncertain whether this was in honor of the legendary Grosta herself.[5] The name was also used by Redguards during the Third Era, although this was unrelated to the Shield-Sister of legend.[6][7]
