The Ring of Phynaster is an artifact created by the eponymous Hero-God of the Altmer. The ring added much needed security for Phynaster to survive his adventurous lifestyle. Because of this, he lived for hundreds of years, and it has since been passed from person to person. The ring has become synonymous with Phynaster, so much so that it will not stay with anyone, other than the Hero-God himself. When it is kept long enough, it will disappear to another resting place, for the next adventurer.[1]

History[edit]

The last living dwarf, Yagrum Bagarn, at one point befriended the sorcerer Divayth Fyr.[2] At Fyr's behest, Yagrum Bagarn wrote the book Tamrielic Lore[3]:241 from the notes that he gathered over the centuries, listing the Ring of Phynaster among various items of "unimaginable significance".[1] By the Interregnum, copies of this book circulated throughout Tamriel, bringing to light some general information on the artifact to its readers.[4]

Several rumors circulated during the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era on how the ring was lost to Phynaster. One states that he was killed by the Wharf Rats, a group of outlaws and cutthroats. To cement their claim over the ring, the Wharf Rats placed a charm on the ring so that it would always return to one of their hundreds of underground sanctuaries. Another tale states that Phynaster had simply lost his ring,[5] with supporting theories claiming that it's influenced by its need to be beside Phynaster.[6] Regardless, a traveler had ultimately found a map to the Ring of Phynaster's resting place, and transcribed the location to the Eternal Champion. After delving through the dungeon, the champion retrieved the Ring of Phynaster.[5]

By the Blight outbreak in 3E 427, the Ring of Phynaster was located at the Senim Ancestral Tomb on Vvardenfell, Morrowind, on the corpse of Pop Je.[7] Later that year, the Nerevarine sold the ring to Torasa Aram, who put it on display in her Museum of Artifacts in Mournhold.[8] The Ring of Phynaster was later found in a body of water by the Last Dragonborn while fishing circa 4E 201.[9]

Notes[edit]

  • In early cut drafts for ESO's south Summerset zone of Varyllis, the Maormer had banished Auri-El from his place in the sky, so High Kinlady Astraela of Dusk helped in forging Phynaster's Ring from pieces of the Shattered Crown, which was spread throughout crypts in the city, to return the deity to his rightful place.[UOL 1]
