A Nord with blue face markings

Woad, also known as Woad war paint,[1] or woad-markings,[UOL 1] is a dye, typically blue in color, known for its magical protective properties. Although primarily associated with the Nords,[2][3] who favor it,[UOL 2] it is also used by other cultures.[1][4][5]

Culture[edit]

Altmer[edit]

While the Altmer are not known to use woad, Sil-Var-Woad is a notable landmark on Summerset Isle.[6]

Argonian[edit]

The Argonian tribe of the Bright-Throat was known for their cheerful use of colorful blue woad dye in their body decorations.[4][7]

Bosmer[edit]

"I met a Bosmer on a road
A vicious freak in mud and woad"

Skald Skullsplitter[5]

The Ballad of Skald Skullsplitter, a boastful drinking song, briefly mentions a Bosmer adorned with woad.[5]

Khajiit[edit]

To avoid being mistaken as Bosmer, many Ohmes tattoo or paint their faces to resemble a feline aspect.[8][9][10] Some Ohmes were described to wear brown woad tattoos.[UOL 3]

Nord[edit]

Nords were said to favor their woad,[UOL 2] which they could apply to strengthen their defenses.[2][3] Certain texts suggest that the practice of Woad was already in use during the era of Ysgramor's original Five Hundered Companions. It is believed that some of these markings contained hidden meanings.[UOL 1]

Reachfolk[edit]

"Woad war paint, deep ritualistic scars, and primitive tattoo strike fear into those facing down the Reachmen berserker in combat."
Flaccus Terentius[1]

Berserkers among the Reachfolk used woad war paint, scarification, and tattoos as part of their cultural practices. One of its purposes was to strike fear into their opponents.[1]
