Amminus Gregori

Amminus Gregori is a member of the Cheydinhal City Guard. When an Oblivion Gate opens outside the city after the Dagon Shrine quest, he is sent to keep an eye on it to make sure nothing unpleasant comes out. He does appear before this point and will disappear from the game after the Main Quest is complete.

He wears the standard Cheydinhal Guard uniform, a Cheydinhal cuirass with the matching shield and a guard helmet. Additionally, he wears chainmail boots, gauntlets and greaves. In combat, he wields a silver longsword. He also carries a large amount of gold. Amminus knows a leveled knight's spell from the Illusion school.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

With the Oblivion Gate open, Amminus will spend most of the day patrolling near it along with three other Cheydinhal guardsmen, only stopping to sleep at the nearby Knights of the Thorn Headquarters from 6pm to midnight.

If you speak to Count Andel Indarys about the Gate, he will tell you to report to Amminus:

"Please. Although I'm concerned about the safe return of my son and the closing of the gate, please see Amminus Gregori for all the details."

Any of the guards near the Gate will refer you to Amminus at any point, with their dialogue depending on the time of the day:

"Please speak to Amminus. He can tell you what you need to know."
"Amminus can answer any questions you may have. He should be resting in the Knights of the Thorn Lodge over yonder."

When you approach the Gate, he will intercept you and warn you:

"I'd advise you to keep your distance from that accursed portal."
Oblivion Gate
"Haven't you heard about these gates to Oblivion opening up all over Tamriel?"
Yes, I have.
"Well then, you know what they're capable of producing. Although, nothing has come through ever since Farwil entered."
No, please tell me about them.
"Well, not much to say really. These gates to... other places... ummm, well... it's very hard to explain. I'm not sure I even understand it. I hear tell that the daedra make their way through these and invade our lands. It's sort of a door to the world where they live. Haven't seen it myself, and don't intend to. Being this close to one makes me nervous. The good news is nothing's come out since Farwil entered."

Either way, you will be able to ask him for more information:

Farwil
"About two days ago, Count Indarys's son, Farwil, entered the Oblivion Gate with six other men. We haven't heard from them since then. The Count fears the worst, and has posted guards here so we can watch and see if anyone comes back out. So far, nothing. At this point, Count Indarys is offering a reward for the recovery of his son from inside the gate... or confirmed news of his demise. If you find him or the rest of the Knights of the Thorn, get them out of there. I'm sure that the Count would be pleased if the gate was closed."

Leaving the conversation now will have him worry:

"Two days and nary a word. I fear the worst."

If you press him for more, he will reveal some interesting opinions on the Knights of the Thorn:

Knights of the Thorn
"New to these parts, eh? The Knights of the Thorn are a bunch of rabble who fancy themselves true knights. Farwil formed the group around two years ago. They make grand boasts, and talk a good talk, but that's all they are. The real work goes to us, the City Guard. I hate to speak ill of them, as something horrible may have happened, but their own bravado got them into this mess."
Why is this behavior tolerated?
"It's tolerated because Farwil is the Count's son. Plain and simple. He has the power and the coin to put it all together. Most of the time, they lounge around the tavern drinking and making up stories of epic battles with impossible odds that they won. It's all garbage. They never patrol, they never help fight off the ocassional [sic] bandit that slips into the city. Ah well. I've said too much already."

Should you leave conversation now he will say:

"Brash child. Now look what he's gotten himself into."

If you speak to him again he will say:

"Be glad to answer any other questions. Just keep your voice down, who knows what could slip out of that gate at any moment."
Farwil
"Farwil is a Dunmer, and he's wearing steel plate armor. His shield should bear the crest of the Knights. Nothing but the best for the Count's son."
Knights of the Thorn
"There are seven of them including Farwil. Even though they're a nuisance, I still hope they haven't been hurt... or worse."
Oblivion Gate
"There's only one way to remove that gate. Venture inside, find the gate's sigil stone and take it. Once you have it, the gate should be closed. From what I hear, you'll appear back where you entered, safe and sound."

He will now part ways with you by saying:

"Tread carefully; I don't know what evil lurks within that gate."

If you speak to him again he will be impressed:

"You're a brave soul to attempt entry to Oblivion. Hopefully, your skill matches your fortitude."
Oblivion Gate
"We will remain out here until the gate is either closed, or something emerges from inside. We need to warn Cheydinhal of impending attacks."

Once you emerge from the Gate, his responses will vary depending on the events that unfolded in Oblivion.

If you killed Farwil, he will angrily refuse to speak to you:

"Are you mad? You killed Farwil, and now you casually speak to me as if nothing's happened? Begone from my sight before I kill you where you stand!"

If Farwil died fighting the Daedra and Amminus is sleeping, any one of the other guards will direct you to him:

"If you're looking for Amminus, he's resting in the Knights Lodge over there."

Once you speak to him, Amminus will instead greet you with:

"You've done it! But what of Farwil?"
He has been slain.
"Then it's a sad day in Cheydinhal. The Knights were boastful louts, but they didn't deserve to be killed. I'll stay here and do a final sweep of the area. You're to report to the Count directly, as he wishes to speak with you."

When leaving conversation he will repeat:

"Count Indarys is waiting."

If you speak to him again he will say:

"I'm sorry, I have to patrol the area... but you should hurry to Castle Cheydinhal. The Count doesn't like to be kept waiting."
Farwil
"Cheydinhal will mourn his loss."
Knights of the Thorn
"It's a shame so many of the Knights fell. I suppose their intentions were good, even if they were a bit self-serving."
Oblivion Gate
"It's a great relief that the gate is gone. Now the people of Cheydinhal can breathe easier."

If instead Farwil survived, he will tell you to speak to the young noble and won't be available for further conversation:

"You've done it! I never thought it possible! I suppose Farwil will wish to talk to you now. Musn't keep the Count's son waiting."

After the quest is complete, when approached he will say:

"I'm honored by your presence, friend."

At this point Amminus will take up a new routine waking up in the Cheydinhal Castle barracks at 6am every morning. He then heads over to the Castle's Private Quarters, where he is meant to patrol until 7pm. Due to a bug, however, he just stands in from of the door. At 7pm he returns to the barracks for a 3 hour dinner before heading off to bed at 10pm. Once the Main Quest is completed, Amminus will disappear from the game.

Unused Dialogue[edit]

  • Amminus has a couple of lines which you will never hear due to his AI packages:
"Hail! This area is extremely dangerous. I'd recommend leaving quickly."
"Whatever comes out of that portal... Cheydinhal is ready."
"You've done it!"
"This day will be remembered."
  • He also has two lines that can never be heard due to the topics being unavailable at certain times in the quest or before it:
Knights of the Thorn
"Hahaha! Knights of the Thorn! A thorn in our side is more like it! Those fools are nothing but a glorified club. They've never contributed to anything useful, and never will."
Farwil
"Perhaps this journey with you has tought him a lesson. Only time will tell."

Bugs[edit]

  • Amminus was meant to patrol inside the Castle's Private Quarters after The Wayward Knight was completed. However, as he does not possess the key to open the door, he simply stands in front of it. ?
