Emfrid

Emfrid is a Nord innkeeper at The Grey Mare in Chorrol. Emfrid sells food and rents beds. You can match her up with Bittneld the Curse-Bringer, though most of the mini-quest won't appear unless you have the Unofficial Oblivion Patch installed.

Emfrid lives a fairly simple life, sleeping from midnight to 4am in a bed behind the counter then serving the inn at all other times. She will still rent a bed to you when sleeping but will not barter with you. She wears a coarse linen shirt with matching coarse linens and stitched leather shoes. She also carries a small amount of gold.

Related Quests[edit]

Dialogue[edit]

If you catch her in a good mood, she may greet you humbly:

"An honor to serve you. I'm Emfrid, owner and publican of the Grey Mare, at your service. A room? Or food? Whatever you wish."

Asking about Chorrol, she will express her concern about the recent assassination:

"In Chorrol, we don't think much about what goes on in the Imperial Palace. But these murders... the emperor and all his sons dead... what's next?"

On renting a bed, she says:

"I have a room ready, if you need it for the night. It'll be 10 gold. Interested?"

If you accept, she says:

"The room's yours for the night. It's just upstairs, the first door on the left. Sleep well."

If your inquire on the topic again, she will say:

"I hope it's comfortable enough for you."

If you lack the gold to rent, she will say:

"I don't run a halfway house, you know. When you have the money, then you can have the room."

Before you bring Martin to Cloud Ruler Temple, you can ask her about Jauffre:

"The old fellow? At Weynon Priory? It's a small community outside the walls, southeast of the Chorrol gate, on the Black Road."

She also has a line related to the quest The Killing Field if her disposition is 50 or higher at the end of the quest:

"Seems like you could handle trouble pretty well. Would you go see what's the matter?"

Quest-Related Events[edit]

A Shadow Over Hackdirt[edit]

After Dar-Ma's disappearance, you can ask Emfrid about her:

"Dar-Ma is the daugher [sic] of Seed-Neeus, the owner of Northern Goods and Trade. You'll often find her out taking the air near the Great Oak."

She will also mention Dar-Ma if asked about Chorrol:

"Maybe you haven't heard, but Seed-Neeus's daughter has disappeared. Very sad."

In addition, Emfrid will be able to mark Hackdirt on your map if asked about the settlement:

"Yes, a small village south of Chorrol. Used to be a prosperous mining town, but it has been nearly deserted for years."

Fingers of the Mountain[edit]

During Fingers of the Mountain, she will tell you about Earana's stay:

"She's staying in one of the rooms upstairs, though she seems to spend most of her time down by the Mages Guild. I don't know what her problem is, and I don't care. Her money's good, and that's all I need to know."

Bittneld and Emfrid[edit]

If you have the Unofficial Oblivion Patch installed, she will reflect on her thoughts on Bittneld:

"Bittneld -- captain of the castle guard? -- he seems like such a nice fellow. Too bad I don't see him in here very much."

When you've finished the quest, she will appreciate your input:

"Did you say something to Bittneld? That was very sweet of you. Now he stops by here every day."

At that point, she may say the following lines to Bittneld:

"I've made you a little pumpkin bread... something to keep up your strength on those long night watches."
"I've put aside a little mead for you. I know you like it."
"The bread's hot and fresh, with a nice crust, and butter and honey, just like you like it."

Bittneld, in return, may say the following things to Emfrid:

"It's been a long day. Quite pleasant to look forward to seeing you here."
"I really must thank the one who recommended you -- and the Grey Mare. Always a splendid feast for my spirits. And the food is good, too."
"After a long day up at the castle, it's refreshing to spend a time with someone as charming and thoughtful as you."

Unused Dialogue[edit]

The mini-quest in which she's involved was most likely intended to be bigger. The Construction Set contains a bit of Demo-quest dialogue:

Dialogue on Bittneld the Curse-Bringer:
"Have you spoken with him already? Please, say you have."
Then, either:
I've not spoken to him.
"You haven't? Why not? Is this just a game to you? I'm sorry. Please. Just come back to me when you've spoken to Bittneld."
or:
Yes, I've spoken to him.
"You've spoken with him? Really? What did he say? I beg you, tell me."
Tell Bittneld's story.
"I knew it! I knew a man like Bittneld wouldn't be interested in those other women! Ha! They parade around in their fancy clothes and their expensive perfumes. What do they know? All fluff and no fiber. That's what I say. But...what if we're wrong? Bittneld has traveled the world, while I've spent my whole life in this tavern. No matter. Will you ask him to visit me? I would be most grateful."
A different result, which relied on a certain quest variable:
"You've spoken to him by now, haven't you?"
Yes, I've spoken to him. Followed by the same replies as above.

There is also a dialogue line on the topic of I would be happy to. where you would have gotten a room in The Grey Mare:

"Thank you...thank you so much. I can't tell you how grateful I am. You always have a home here at the Grey Mare."

And there are also some lines you would hear upon entering and exiting conversation:

"What is it now?"
"Good to see you again. What can I do for you?"
"Come back when you've learned something."
"Goodbye. And thank you."

Apparently, there was even more dialogue between Bittneld and Emfrid where they thanked each other for giving compliments, and perhaps even gifts:

"Goodness. Well, I hope you don't say that to all the girls."
"Please! You'll make me blush!"
"You shouldn't have. That's very kind of you."
"Really? How thoughtful."

Rumors[edit]

The people of Chorrol have a good opinion of her inn:

"The Grey Mare isn't a bad place to stay, especially if you're low on Septims."
"Yes. I like the Grey Mare as well."

Unsurprisingly, her competitor Talasma has a different opinion:

"The Oak and Crosier is the place of choice for well-bred visitors to Chorrol. The Grey Mare is more suitable for... others."

When asked about Chorrol, Casta Scribonia will suggest pairing Emfrid up with Bittneld:

"Who is the fairest of them all? Other than myself? The proprietor of the Grey Mare is lovely. She and the guard captain would be a nice couple...."

If you succeed, she will then comment:

"I hear that Emfrid and Captain Bittneld are spending a lot of time together. You wouldn't have anything to do with that, would you?"

Bugs[edit]

  • Provided her disposition was over 50, Emfrid was supposed to mention Valus Odiil and his sons when asked about Chorrol. Due to an incorrect quest stage condition, however, you will never hear this.
