The Voice of the Village[edit]

When you reach the outskirts of Vashabar, you will find Laeni, Clendagal, Minth and Greenspeaker Nedolir. There will appear to have been an argument:

Minth: "We're done here."
<Minth walks away.>
Greenspeaker Nedolir: "Agreed. You arse."
<Greenspeaker Nedolir walks away in the opposite direction.>
Laeni: "Yffre's bones! Fine!"

If you speak with Clendagal before Laeni and starting the quest:

"Hey there, traveler. You've found us at an awkward time.
You'd better talk to Laeni. She can explain better than me."

Speaking with Laeni, she will explain that she and Clendagal want to marry but their fathers absolutely hate each other and refuse to their blessing. The argument you witness is the last straw, and she asks you to tell her aunt Agawen Ciiril that she and Clendagal plan to leave Vashabar.

You can then talk to Clendagal for how he feels about things:

"Hey, thanks. Not every Man or Mer that comes up the road would help a couple in the middle of a family fuss."
How do you feel about all of this?
"I'm angry. I just have a hard time letting it out like Laeni does. I was so proud to move here with the rest of my kin, sure I'd marry my beloved in this beautiful new village.
But you saw what we're up against."
Is today the first time you spoke of leaving?
"Not even close. But today's arguments were the last leaf to fall.
This has gone on long enough. Laeni and I have been together for years, and we've wanted to be married almost as long."
Why didn't you try to leave before today?
"Lots of little things. The season wasn't right, we were helping establish the village.
Honestly, I think we both just hoped our fathers would see reason. But we're done waiting. It's time to act."
You're proud of Vashabar?
"Y'ffre help me, yes. Without my family's help Vashabar would never have been grown. Why wouldn't I be proud?
And we call the forest Dawnwood for a number of reasons. A new day for my clan, for Valenwood, even for West Weald."
How were these buildings created?
"Greenspeakers, including Laeni's father, grew the village after Dawnwood covered the land. Vashabar's still a tender shoot, by Valenwood standards, but it's expanding every day.
From the smallest sprigs, graht-oaks grow."
You're proud of the village but you still want to leave?
"We don't want to go, damn it! We're so proud of the clan, of this huge chance we took moving across the River Strid.
But I love that woman! I want to stand in front of the village, pronounce that love, and drink rotmeth till we're all sick."
Have you heard about King Nantharion's true plan? (If you completed Seeds of Suspicion)
"Of course. I wish I could say I was surprised. Nantharion always had an answer for everything, but there was something…I don't know. Murky? Like mold beneath the surface.
My father is still stalwart as a spruce, of course."
You father still believes in the Dawnway?
"You should have heard him. The dawn's light is something we all have to look for!
The village comes first and only, in his eyes. He cries at night, when he thinks no one can hear. But always, the village first."

When you see Agawen Ciiril, but haven't spoke to her yet:

"Best of days to you, traveler. I hope you've come to Vashabar in good mood."

When you speak with Agawen Ciiril, she will want the couple to stay, so provides you some of Ciiril's Jagga to give to the fathers to try and convince them to relent and allow them to marry. When that doesn't work, she asks you to speak with other villagers like Gundelion and Malaniel and you are eventually pointed towards Spinner Belwelas. The spinner will tell you to retrieve a copy of the Rite of Propagation and bring it to Agawen Ciiril. The rite puts the decision for an issue in the hands of the community as a whole, and the decision made must be abided by.

Ciiril will agree with the plan, and asks you to find Laeni and Clendagal at their hideout to the south of Vashabar, while she gathers people for the rite. When you arrive at the ruins, you will find the couple planning their journey:

Laeni: "Damn it. Fine, then we make for Varen's Wall."
Clendagal: "Right. From there, we head for Anvil. But it's … oh. Traveler, hello."

Talk with Clendagal to show him the Rite of Propagation:

"I see Ciiril found you. This is a happy place for us, traveler.
I hope you've come with news to match."
Actually, I think I have. Take a look at this.
"An old scroll? Huh, I've never heard of this before. The Rite of Propagation? We gather some symbols, present them to friends and family. And ask the village what it thinks we should do.
Traveler, with this we might not have to leave!"
It was Spinner Belwelas's idea. Ciiril is already gathering the villagers.
"The spinner! I didn't even know he liked me. Thank you. You have no idea what this means to us. We've been on a blade's edge since we spoke.
We've already asked you for so much. If you're willing, do you have time to help us gather our symbols?"
Sure. What are you thinking?
"The Dawnway means so much to me and my family. It draws from Ayleid culture, and there are several Ayleid ruins nearby.
A mosaic from the ancient empire of the Heartland Elves would perfectly represent me to the village."
What about a symbol for Laeni?
"She's been mouthing words at me over your shoulder. Meet her where we began the ceremony to grow Vashabar. She thinks a dormant seedpod will represent her quite well.
I'll mark your map and we'll see you beyond the village. Laeni, we get to stay!"
I'll see you two outside the village then.

After talking with Clendagal, an excited Laeni will approach him:

Laeni:' "I can't rutting believe it! Can you rutting believe it, Clen?"
Clendagal: "Hah! The sooner we get those symbols the faster we can start planning the wedding."

Afterwards, you can talk to Clendagal again and ask about the mosaic he mentioned:

"There are mosaics aplenty in the old ruins marked on your map. I'll meet you near the entrance. And … thank you again, traveler. I still can't believe we have this chance."
Can you tell me more about the mosaic you want me to recover?
"The Dawnway, the philosophy my family and I follow, draws heavily from ideas and concepts in Ayleid culture.
The Heartland Elves were cruel at times, but they were also magnificent artisans and explorers."
So this mosaic would represent your commitment to the village and to your family?
"Absolutely. Deep in the ruins, our ancestors inlaid beautiful depictions of Ayleid life and love into the walls, celebrating the community those grounds once nurtured.
Now that art is shattered. But even those fragments hold meaning in Vashabar."

You can meet with Clendagal to the west of the village, outside the ruins of Cualorn. He will call you over once he sees you:

Clendagal: "I'm here, friend. If you're ready, let's head inside."

Speaking with him before entering the ruin:

"Keep your eyes open. The Heartland Elves offer many lessons to those willing to listen. But other things live in these ruins now."
Can you tell me more about the mosaic you want me to recover? (Same as above)

When you enter Cualorn, Clendagal will become your follower:

Clendagal: "The wildlife down here might see us as a threat."

While walking the ruins, he will comment:

Clendagal: "The Heartland Elves never did anything halfway, did they?"

In the large chamber, there will be something in the way of the mosaic:

Clendagal: "Troll! That's a big troll!"

After you kill the troll, you can approach the remains of the mosaic:

Clendagal: "That's it, traveler! An Ayleid mosaic that represents me perfectly!"

Once you have picked up the Ayleid Mosaic, you can speak with Clendagal. If you helped him first:

"We've got it. Let's get out of here so you can head for the ritual site. Laeni needs her offering as well."

Otherwise if you helped him last:

"Let's get back. And hopefully, this won't make our fathers any angrier than they already are."

As Clendagal leaves he will say:

Clendagal: "Someday we'll have to explore this ruin more completely. Not today though."

When you get close to the exit, he will run out:

Clendagal: "I'll meet you back in Vashabar. To perform the rite, and face my father."

After you have helped both of them find items that represent them, you can return to Vashbar. You will find a group gathered around Ciiril's beer garden, and Laeni and Clendagal will stand beneath a stone arch. Ciiril will then notice them and Nedolir will demand to know what is going on.

Speaking with Clendagal before the rite starts:

"I'm ready to do this. Nervous, but ready."

Once you have spoken with Greenspeaker Nedolir and told him what is happening, the Rite of Propagation will begin:

<The pair kneel before the crowd.>
Clendagal: "Vashabar, we need your help. Laeni and I want to marry."
Laeni: "As you all know, our fathers refuse to support us. And so we invoke the Rite of Propagation, an ancient Bosmer custom."
Clendagal: "We gathered these symbols, representations of our roles in the village. An Ayleid mosaic for me."
Laeni: "And a greenspring seed for me. Friend, you helped us find them. Please bring them forth."
<The pair stand up.>

You can then place the Ayleid Mosaic and Dormant Greenspring Seed either side of them:

Clendagal: "These symbols represent our commitment to the village and to each other."
Laeni: "Our future lies in whatever you decide. Do we have your support?"
Agawen Ciiril: "Well, what do you say Vashabar? Do you support this union?"
Gundelion: "Aye!"
Malaniel: "Aye!"
Spinner Belwelas: "Aye!"
Melbora: "Aye!"
Agawen Ciiril: "Hah, there it is! Congratulations you two. Let's give the couple a moment. Drinks for everyone!"
<Clendagal and Laeni embrace as the onlookers walk away.>
Greenspeaker Nedolir: "All right, you old arse. The village has spoken so let's make the best of this."
Minth: "I suppose you're right, you bastard. If we're going to be kin, let's get to drinking like it."

Speaking with Clendagal before Laeni:

"Don't usually get overly emotional. But I'm … hmm. Why don't you talk to Laeni for a moment?"

If you spoke to Laeni but haven't turned in the quest:

"She's already making plans, I can tell. I just hope we can enjoy the moment."

Talking to Clendagal after completing the quest:

"I can't tell you the last time I've seen Laeni smile like that. Thank you, traveler. You've changed our lives."

In Memory Of[edit]

If you helped Laeni and Clendagal previously, they will attend the party at Beragon's house along with Greenspeaker Darolith. You can ask Clendagal how things are going:

"I can't believe the greenspeaker selected us to join her in Skingrad! I guess it's because you helped us with our betrothal. Thanks again for that, by the way.
Still not sure about a Wood Elf living in a structure that wasn't grown, though."
Have you and Laeni gotten married yet?
"Not yet. We want to see how the talks between the greenspeaker and the count work out. Laeni doesn't want our celebration to get lost in the brambles should relations between Dawnwood and the rest of the Weald take a turn for the worse. Soon, though!"
