Vingalmo

Vingalmo is a High Elf bandit wizard and vampire in Volkihar Keep. He believes magic is more important than strength and can often be seen arguing with Orthjolf. He aspires to become more powerful in the Volkihar vampire hierarchy, and will send Salonia Caelia to retrieve the newly purified Bloodstone Chalice from you during The Bloodstone Chalice.

Vingalmo wears a set of gray colored vampire armor with a matching pair of boots. He is equipped with a leveled one-handed weapon which can be up to elven quality. He carries random leveled bandit loot, as well as a 25% chance of carrying 1-9 gold.

Quest-Related Events[edit]

Bloodline[edit]

When you and Serana enter the castle, Vingalmo will be the first to acknowledge her return.

Vingalmo: "How dare you trespass here! Wait... Serana? Is that truly you? I cannot believe my eyes! My lord! Everyone! Serana has returned!"
Serana: "I guess I'm expected."
Feran: "I can't believe it."

The Bloodstone Chalice[edit]

If you speak to him during the quest, he has something to say about his rival.

"You'll be a welcome addition to the court, I'm sure. If I may, let me offer you a piece of advice. Be careful who you trust. Not all of us have the court's best interests at heart. Orthjolf, for example. He'll tell you he means well, but believe me, he can't be trusted at all. Keep that in mind, will you?"
Why can't Orthjolf be trusted?
"He claims to serve loyally, but he really covets the throne. He sees himself in charge someday. His ambition will justify any action. Put your faith in him, and you will regret it, I promise you."

New Allegiances[edit]

When you ask around for work around the Keep, you'll be directed to speak with Vingalmo. He'll ask you to turn a mortal. You will be sent to turn one of three targets. Haran is one of them.

What can I do to help?
"I've found a new candidate, ripe for Harkon's Gift. I'm sending you to welcome this soul into our family.
Haran manages the inn in Winterhold. A forsaken place under the shadow of the mages guild. She will help us keep an eye on the mages.
Put her mind to rest, allay her fear through vampiric seduction and when she is in a pliant condition, embrace her and bite her on the neck."

You can ask him further questions after accepting the task.

What do you mean by allaying fear through vampiric seduction?
"Our blood grants us power to calm and relax. If you currently lack the gift, forgo feeding for a day and that power will come naturally.
Once your thrall is suitable sedated, you will be able to impart the gift without resistance."
Can't anyone become a vampire if bitten by one?
"While the blessed state of undeath can be 'accidentally' conferred - consider the brutish creatures you find wailing in dank hovels in the wild...
Only those who can trace their ancestry through Harkon's mortal blood line [sic] can faithfully accept the power conferred by his Vampiric blood.
And among those, it seems, only when the heavens show the correct aspects.
I have found such a soul and the stars appear cooperative.
Why am I able to bestow the gift of Harkon's blood?
"Because he himself bestowed upon you a portion of his vitality when he infused you with his own blood the night you returned with Serana."
A small measure of his blood now and forever flows through your veins"
Understood.
"When you offer the embrace, do so away from prying eyes. Our new sibling will then likely require rest while [his/her] blood undergoes the change.
Return to me when your part is done."

Once the deed is done, return to him to inform him that Haran has been infected.

Haran has been welcomed to the family.
"Very good. Should you visit her again, I suspect you'll find our new sibling appreciates her transformation."

Cairine can be another target.

What can I do to help?
"I've found a new candidate, ripe for Harkon's Gift. I'm sending you to welcome this soul into our family.
A pathetic creature in her present condition, but the gift will embolden her. And her lowly state suits her to being our eyes and ears in Markarth.
Put her mind to rest, allay her fear through vampiric seduction and when she is in a pliant condition, embrace her and bite her on the neck."
Understood.
"When you offer the embrace, do so away from prying eyes. Our new sibling will then likely require rest while her blood undergoes the change. Return to me when your part is done."

Once the deed is done, return to him to inform him that Cairine has been infected.

Cairine has been welcomed to the family.
"Very good. Should you visit her again, I suspect you'll find our new sibling appreciates her transformation."

Valindor is the third target.

"I've found a new candidate, ripe for Harkon's Gift. I'm sending you to welcome this soul into our family.
Valindor of Riften has his ears in places that we'd love to listening in. Joining our family should increase our possibilities in the south.
Put his mind to rest, allay his fear through vampiric seduction and when he is in a pliant condition, embrace him and bite him on the neck."

Once the deed is done, return to him to inform him that Valindor has been infected.

Valindor has been welcomed to the family.
"Very good. Should you visit him again, I suspect you'll find our new sibling appreciates his transformation."

Dialogue[edit]

When you exit conversation, he may say:

"May mortals quake at your approach."

If you approach Vingalmo in Vampire Lord form, he can say:

"You realize it's not really necessary to take on that form here."

Conversations[edit]

He can occasionally be seen conversing with Orthjolf. Orthjolf occasionally starts off on a bad note by mocking Vingalmo's habits.

Orthjolf: "Well, well. Where have you been, Vingalmo? Nose stuck in a book all day?"
Vingalmo: "Orthjolf, I'm surprised! I didn't even think you knew what a book was, my brutish friend."
Orthjolf: "You'd do well to watch that tongue, elf."
Vingalmo: "And you'd do well to be more careful of whom you engage in witty banter."

Orthjolf will occasionally take a jab at Vingalmo's apparent lack of punctuality.

Orthjolf "Surprised you weren't at the last meeting with our Lord, Vingalmo. Too busy plotting to overthrow him to show up?"
Vingalmo: "What? What meeting? I wasn't informed of any such thing!"
Orthjolf: "Oh I see. I just understand he'd sent for both of us. How awkward for you."

Notes[edit]

  • The name Vingalmo is mentioned in the book Night of Tears, as the author of Vingalmo's Treatise on the Altmer Antecedent. It is unknown if they are meant to be the same person.
  • In the Prima Official Game Guide, the summary for him reads:
"Once a member of the Thalmor, Vingalmo was turned by Harkon some hundred years ago and has found vampirism quite enjoyable. Already an accomplished diplomat, he has used his skills to work his way up in Harkon's court and made himself useful. Ultimately his goal is to be the man in charge, but he's in no hurry and is biding his time, attempting to move things into place to make it an easy transition."

Bugs[edit]

  • Vingalmo does not headtrack like other NPCs; he always stares straight ahead instead of looking at you and other NPCs when they are close. This is because Altmer vampires are not set to headtrack.
  • Occasionally, Vingalmo will offer no quests, even though other NPCs will direct you to him. This may be due to you curing your vampirism or The Gift being the last quest completed.
    • Typing setstage dlc1rv07 100 in the console, then turning in the New Allegiances quest (which will be added by the former command) will fix this.
