Market bugged, can't complete or start next quest[edit]

I completed this quest, but it seems to have bugged out on me, as Brynjolf is standing in his stall with all of the market people standing/sitting around him. Even at night. They don't move, and don't offer their services with the exception of Brand-Shei. I left the city for a month and came back, and they were still sitting there. Brynjolf never shows up in the Ragged Flagon, so I can't start the next quest. On top of that, it's bugged out the Dark Brotherhood quest to fix up the sanctuary as all of the patrons will gripe and complain to you to finish Brynjolf's quests. But I can't. Any help? (Aresvallis 12:39, 22 November 2011 (UTC))

Nevermind. I found these console codes online and they did the trick. You have to be in the Ragged Flagon and use these.

On my new character, I went right to Riften and started the Thieves Guild quest line. The Market bug didn't take affect. On my last character I waited until I had to go there during the Main Quest looking for Esbern and did the Madesi Switcheroo. That's when the bug occurred. There's a second difference in the way I handled my new character- I waited for Brynjolf to finish his distraction and then come talk to me. On my last character, I went right to him to talk to him while he was still in his stall. I'm going to test this out a bit and see if I can duplicate the bug. Aresvallis 14:39, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
I haven't been able to duplicate the bug on my new character. I put the ring on Brand-Shei and then immediately went over to Brynjolf before he was finished with the distraction and talked to him, as I had done on my previous character. I thought that would bug it out but it didn't. The time it bugged for me was when I was doing it as part of the Main quest, and it was strangely at night/in the evening. I think I'll try again if I make a new character but do it at night. Aresvallis 03:13, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Byrnjolf won't talk in Ragged Flagon XBOX360l[edit]

Byrnjolf was just going "hmmm?" in front of his stall so I attacked it, then I ran to the entrance of the ratway, attacked him and while he was standing up again I entered the ratway, that helped in order to get him to Ragged, however, once there he didn't speak anything but "hmmm?", tried pickpocketing it, attacking etc. I failed A chance arrangement and then attacked him thinking he would just die. I believe the problem starts with delphine, I finished the embassy quest, but she didn't give me the new one. — Unsigned comment by 201.141.211.41 (talk) at 23:38 on January 4, 2012

It's not Delphine. I'm having similar problem on my current guy and hadn't bothered MQ, yet. — Unsigned comment by 172.129.155.11 (talk) at 02:23 on January 22, 2012
'BRYNJOLF WONT TALK IN RAGGED FLAGON AND I DIDNT GET A QUEST AFTER A CHANGE ARRANGEMENT'
Brynjolf just saying "hmm?" and also i didn't get a quest to meet him in the ragged flagon even when he told me to after the first quest!— Unsigned comment by Maxgoyz (talkcontribs) on 4 April 2012
Hi I have the same problem, normally Taking Care of Business would be triggered following A Chance Arrangement but it never did for me. All Brynjolf says is hmmm?
I think that finishing the main quest that involves him might help but I'm a long way off from that. — Unsigned comment by 204.191.231.50 (talk) at 14:41 on 16 September 2013
hey it has nothing to do with delphine, brynjolf wont say anything but "hmm?" except when delphine told me to talk to him, he actually talked, but now hes back to just saying "hmm?" -_- i have no idea how to fix it

Citizens are stuck around Brynjolf's stall[edit]

I completed A chance arrangement, and continued with the thieves guild questline, but all of the people that brynjolf distracted, are still standing there. For in game weeks they have stood there, and I married one of them and I cant divorce or move them. So my question is, can I stop the script that holds them in place, or are they perpetually stuck staring at nothing? Ramburgler 20:04, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Have you tried reloading? Cheap answer I know, but it's the most common solution.-Zydrate[][] 20:05, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
This bug isn't for cheap solutions. It remains in effect no matter how many times you reload. It's also quite widespread. I took a look around the web yesterday and found the codes I posted above. It only transports Brynjolf to the Ragged Flagon so you can get him to give you the next quest, The market people will still stand around, and Brynjolf will go right back to his place afterward. As far as I know there is no solution, but it may be possible it's stuck in a quest stage that didn't get triggered out. Aresvallis 23:32, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
It probably has to do with me jumping down to the ratway before he is arrested, as he is still there. The wierd thing is that he does not have the ring. I tried to re-give him the ring using console to spawn another ring, but it did nothing.Ramburgler 23:35, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Nope, I don't think it's caused by that, in mine Brand-Shei was arrested. He showed up in his sitting down spot when I came back a week later. He also does not have the ring because I tried the same thing. Aresvallis 00:35, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Found a fix[edit]

OH! It makes the people leave the Market! This is awesome! Thanks! Aresvallis 03:19, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

It bugged for me too on PS3[edit]

I started the quest, i directly pickpocket madresi's key, steal the ring, pickpocket it to brand shei before he even sits down on the crates.. Then talk to brynjolf. Apparently i did this too fast since the NPCs have been stuck forever staring at the stall. I even tried shouting at them, assaulting them, pickpocketting.. nothing helped/helps.. To this moment they all are there except brynjolf, he did stay there for a while but he made it down to the ragged flaggon somehow, i really have no idea how.. I actually found him talking to a wall right before the ragged flaggon door.. he was doing the "stall dialogue" but with his thieves guild armor equipped.

The funny part is brand shei was never arrested but he still sits on that crate.. i can trade with him in daytime but the other merchants refuse to trade with me no matter the time because they all rather stare at the stall for eternity.. Hell i even managed to make the beggar lady kill the begger male. Pickpocket one of them then layed down my arms.. For some reason the guards and the beggar lady smashed the dude to pieces.

So yeah, quest completed.. but somehow brand shei escaped imprisonment - obviously a bug, since i did plant the ring successfully. A pretty major bug for me since i now miss out on 2 merchants with a decent amount of gold to sell items to...

I hate bugs like these. I'm just happy i at least could still join the thieves guild. Sorry for a long post but i wanted to make it as detailed as possible. Please do not remove it. — Unsigned comment by 81.231.120.17 (talk) at 15:56 on November 27, 2011

Had the EXACT same thing happen to me. I completed the quest very quickly as well, which is what bugged it I suppose. I also found Brynjolf talking to the wall inside of the ratway vaults, right before the ragged flagon entrance. I loaded an earlier save and tried this again, and the second time around this quest went fine without a single glitch. (99.136.224.214 06:12, 17 December 2011 (UTC))

PS3 bugged out at night time[edit]

So I went to go join the thieves guild in Riften this is not my first time doing this, just a new character. At any rate I got the quest to join the thieves guild by stealing the ring and planting it. However I did this quest at around 12 AM so, no one was there while Brynjolf was talking however I was still able to plant the ring because the guy was sitting on the boxes, and once I planted it I went to Brynjolf and he said good job etc. and to meet him down in the Ragged Flagon, however while on route to it, I actually encountered him while killing the mage blocking the door to it, but he does not go down into the Ragged Flagon like I did. Insted he went back up to Riften and gave the same speach and not only that when I went down into the Flagon hoping he would show up, the conversation with Brynjolf amongst the other thieves and the bartender was going on " you and the other thieves are a dying breed Brynjolf just face it " and he wasnt even there. Now all the merchants just stand there near Brynjolf 24/7 and Brynjolf just sits in his stall, giving me the same two options as if I needed help getting down to the Ragged Flagon. I have tried killing people, pickpocketing him, restarting my ps3, everything. Any ideas on how to fix this? — Unsigned comment by 108.9.154.86 (talk) at 01:41 on November 28, 2011

There's enough topics about the Brynjolf/Market bug. Use one of those instead of making a new one. It's getting hard to keep track! Aresvallis 03:10, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Same Problem in xbox 360[edit]

Do you know any of any way to solution this problem because he keeps saying that "we are almost there, and i need him to be there so they can give me my thief's guild armor. Could you hel me? please. — Unsigned comment by 189.169.43.75 (talk) at 00:45 on December 4, 2011

Attack Brynjolf and try to get him and you next to the door that opens the Ratway. It may be difficult, but keep trying until you're there. Once you're there, knock him unconscious and sheath your weapon. Then he shall be non hostile. Then quickly press the button to open the door and immediately use your unrelenting force shout on him. Once you're in the Rataway, he should be next to you. If not reload. Worked for me today. From Kharwog

Can't get Brynjolf to move from market stall[edit]

Please help! As I am using my Xbox 360 to play Skyrim, I can't use any console commands. Is there any other way to get Brynjolf to the Ragged Flagon and free all the shopkeepers from their positions in front of him? — Unsigned comment by ChaosZeus999 (talkcontribs) at 11:14 on December 14, 2011

Yeah me too, same damn thing. I chequed the quest bugs here http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:A_Chance_Arrangement#Bugs and even tried to fix it, I was able to bring Brynjolf to the ratway's door but he just doesn't enter it. I'll never be able to join the thieves guild then? — Unsigned comment by 201.25.179.31 (talk) at 02:31 on December 22, 2011

Brand-Shei forever stuck in jail (PS3/PC)[edit]

I did this quest quite long ago and have moved on in the Thieves Guild quests. It's been more than a month in game for sure. Brand-Shei is still in jail. Is there anything I can do to get him out? Hiddos 16:44, 8 December 2011 (UTC) (forgot to login last time)

I've got that bug, too. I've been trying various console codes and other things to get him out, but so far I haven't had any success. Disabling him, resurrecting him, moving him to the market, resetting his ai, even spawning a new Brand-Shei didn't work. So no, probably not for a while, at least until the Creation Kit comes out. Aresvallis 23:30, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
And when the Creation Kit comes out, it still won't help me because I play on PS3. :( Hiddos 13:48, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Obviously, that part was aimed for those with the PC version since the bug is cross platform. I was aware you specifically were on PS3. Hard to miss, being in the title. That should probably be changed, actually. Aresvallis 22:17, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I didn't mean to write that directly at you. I hope Bethesda gets a fix for it on every platform though. Hiddos 21:42, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
So do I. They don't have a really great history with bug fixes though, but we'll see. Skyrim's bugs are far more game breaky than Oblivion's were... Aresvallis 00:11, 15 December 2011 (UTC)
Detected the same bug. I'm wondering whether this happens only with a few people, or everyone is affected (and only a few notice it). PC users can fix the bug by console. Check my fix in the bugs section. He walked right out of prison after the fix (no need to pick the lock). --Timenn-<talk> 16:08, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
I once picked the lock for him to walk out, but he didn't even bother. Any suggestions on what else I can try, like don't visit Riften for a month or something? I heard it works for other things sometimes. Hiddos 10:58, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Routes Leading to Activating "A Chance Arrangement" / Joining the Thieves Guild[edit]

I am currently working on developing an "Obtaining the Quest" section for the detailed walkthrough on this page, similar to the (I think) useful section so named on the initial/portal quest leading into joining the Dark Brotherhood, Innocence Lost. If anyone has identified additional ways that lead to or can lead to this quest, please add them here, or edit "Obtaining the Quest" on the quest page (once I've published it). --Jreynolds2Talk 02:52, 18 January 2012 (UTC)

If you are here right now, please describe (simply) how you are stuck on this. What is happening now? What did you do to try to activate the quest? I'm not an expert on the quest or the 360, but I will try to give some advice if I can. Please sign your questions or posts by typing ~~~~ at the end of your question or comment. --Jreynolds2Talk Contrib E-mail 07:55, 18 January 2012 (UTC)
I completed "A Chance Arrangement", successfully I might add. Unfortunately "Taking Care of Business" did not appear afterwards. I cannot initiate dialogue with Brynjolf as all he says is "Hmmm?" He is in the market from maybe 9 or 10 PM until 8 PM the following day. He then makes one trip through the Ratway to the Ragged Flagon and then to the Cistern. I cannot initiate dialog at any point, he doesn't change into the guild armor. Also when I enter the cistern I am acknowledged as a trespasser and the men inside will attack. Immediately after a few seconds in the Cistern, Brynjolf returns to the market and stays there until the following evening. Characters such as Delvin Mallory tell me to finish with Brynjolf and then come talk to them. Thieves are spawning randomly every night in the marketplace. I have attempted to attack Brynjolf or get caught stealing as some players have suggested. I don't have any saves previous to "A Chance Arrangement" Please respond if you have encountered this problem and have a solution.Danerius xDAx (talk) 14:54, 16 September 2013 (GMT)

Talk to Brynjolf About Joing the Thieve's Guild Bug [FIX][edit]

I typically play on the 360 but I have had to fix the game multiple times by converting my save to PC. Anyways, this isn't about save game modifications (this part is just to say that fixing something on the PC will keep whatever is done when converted back to 360).

If anyone didn't know (since it doesn't say it on the main page) is that if you get this misc quest after becoming a member just do 'SETSTAGE TG00MAULHANDLER 200' and it will be completed.

Similar methods can be used to fix many of the bugs that would be completely simple to fix on PC to also be fixed on the Xbox 360. -Sean- 23:09, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

I get this same bug on my Xbox, are you saying I need to convert my saved game to the PC in order to fix it? 107.10.138.89 12:41, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Brynjolf Marketplace bug[edit]

  • Brynjolf won't finish creating his distraction in the Market. The effect is that everyone will remain in the center of the market plaza, being told the "news" repeatedly and Brynjolf will not move, therefore not going to the Ragged Flagon to meet you for the next quest. This may be caused by planting the ring at night or speaking with Brynjolf before his distraction is finished.
    • On PC It may be solved by using the console command clearquestaliases TG00SP .
    • Alternatively, you may solve this by forcibly pushing Brynjolf to the door of the Ratway. Then activate the door and quickly talk to him - he should then be inside the Ratway with you. If this does not work, reload and retry. Once inside, attack him, run to The Ragged Flagon and yield to him when you're at the bar. Talk to him quickly, before he can leave to go back to his stall, and you will be able to progress in the quest.

I have never had a problem with this playing on PC. Looking at the contents of this page, I can see that some users had problems with it for Xbox back when the game was first released, but it's been nearly two years and there's still a vn tag on this entry. Do we know anything about whether this bug has been fixed yet, if indeed it can be confirmed? ThuumofReason (talk) 13:25, 6 November 2013 (GMT)

XBOX 360 SOLUTION[edit]

I am not sure if this will work for everyone but I just spent an hour trying to complete the task by placing the ring in the pocket but was having the same problem as everyone else, as they all just stood there and didn't move.

The way I completed the task was to keep loading the game from a previous save point and repeating the task until I got caught picking the pocket of the lizard (sorry cant remember his name). Once this happens, pay the bounty of 25, and then go back and find the main guy who asked you to do the task. He will then talk to you and the task will be completed.

I hope this works for you all!

P.S. Sorry for the lack of names, I cant remember them and am in a rush so cant look them up.

An alternative scenario for A Chance Arrangement[edit]

If Brynjolf and the townspeople are stuck , drop the stolen ring and pick it up again. A guard will confront you and just say that you will pay the fine. They will confiscate the ring and you can talk to Brynjolf again. — Unsigned comment by 121.54.58.247 (talk) at 07:33 on 1 August 2014

Writing "I did everything" doesn't really clear things up though. So I guess you've tried the pickpocketing solution above and that Brynjolf is stuck in the market place? Is anyone else stuck? Enodia (talk) 04:52, 7 December 2014 (GMT)

A Chance Arrangement bug(xbox360)[edit]

Does anyone know how to get Brynjolf down into The Ragged Flaggon because he wont move he is silently staring at the temple of mara Once I attacked him and ran off and he killed everyone listening to him and now he is staring at the temple of mara like a weirdo I need help.

Much Better to GET CAUGHT Intentionally![edit]

Successfully stealing and planting the ring permanently removes Brand-Shei from his market stall. He is an outdoor (no loading screen) general merchant (buys anything) with 750 gold every other day. Keeping him in business is very desirable.

Recommended plan is to successfully sneak-pick the sliding door , then stand up, pick open the strongbox and 'take all'. You will get a bounty of 6 gold, which you agree to pay. All the goodies in the box can then be recovered from the evidence chest in the jail.

There is no penalty for this in the quest line, it continues the same either way. Off to the Ragged Flagon you go!

Skyrim SE: Possible bug reversion[edit]

On Skyrim SE, first playthrough (Having not played in a couple years now) I lift Riften and came back. None of the Strongboxes in the market were locked when I tried to follw up this quest, and the ring never appeared in Madesi's Strongbox. — Unsigned comment by Jonnan001 (talkcontribs) at 22:55 on 19 November 2017

The patch note is rather unclear in what it does by saying it "fixes it". This could mean that you can talk to Brynjolf and progress the quest without having to steal and plant the ring. It is also unclear what is broken by leaving Riften, but I assume it is breaking Brynjolf's speech script. Something else weird might be going on though, as all the strongboxes should be locked. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 01:00, 20 November 2017 (UTC)
My apologies, upon leaqving and re-entering the cell, Brynjolf properly started the distraction (Something I'd forgotten about, thus had not noticed he wasn't doing) and the ring properly appeared. Still no idea why all the lockboxes were unlocked (And as a side note, Brand Shei's was set as 'not stealing' even before I finished his quest and gave him his book) so that's odd, but the quest did reset itself and work. My fault for not exiting and re-entering the area before searching for and finding an old bug it seemed at first blush to replicate. — Unsigned comment by Jonnan001 (talkcontribs) at 18:45 on 20 November 2017

Putting the Ring on the Wrong Person?[edit]

What happens if you get the Ring into Brynjolf's pocket? Can it be even done? — Unsigned comment by ‎176.63.10.111 (talk) at 16:49 on 25 December 2018 (UTC)

I don't think it's possible to do this, but to answer your question, what would happen is you'd simply fail it as if you hadn't planted the ring on Brand-Shei. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 16:49, 25 December 2018 (UTC)
