Wry-Eye Moranie, ringleader in the Old Ebonheart Thieves Guild

Wry-Eye Moranie is a Dark Elf thief and a Ringleader of the Thieves Guild in Old Ebonheart. She can be found at The Empress Katariah tavern, and is a firm believer the Thieves Guild's role as caring for the poor of the city. As a result, her quests concern dealing with the activities of Otrebus Delagia, a Cyrodiilic gangster who has been muscling in on the city slums.

She is not entirely the one-eyed guttersnipe she claims to be - Nelara, whom Moranie directs you to help, refers to her as 'her highness', which fellow thief Cap'n Fentus laughingly notes could be in reference to Nelara's supposed descendance from the lost House Raathim. It later becomes clear that Moranie knows more about House Raathim than she lets on, being well-aware of the location of the deathmask of the Empress Katariah, a member of that same house.

Wry-Eye Moranie can also offer training to those of Operative rank or higher in the guild for Sneak, Short Blade, and Security.

For protection, she wears a netch leather cuirass, a pair of netch leather boots, and a pair of cloth bracers. For clothing, she wears a common shirt, a common skirt, and her enchanted eye. She wields an ebony dagger.

Aside from her natural resistance to fire and the sanctuary provided by her ancestors, she knows no spells.

Dialogue[edit]

  • Greeting:
(If you have a bounty):
"You've got a price on your head, %PCName. Not a good thing for thieves like us. I can take care of it for you."
"You'll find him in Ald'ruhn. Likely at the Rat in the Pot."
"Go to Sadrith Mora. You'll find Big Helende at Dirty Muriel's Cornerclub. It's quite a place."
  • Delagia's gang:
"The gang came to this city from Cyrodiil a few years ago. They had the money to pay and the muscle to coerce, so they quickly seized the ownership of many of the cheap houses on the east side. Their tenants are often poor people who can't afford their rent, so the gang loans them gold putting them in debt. It's all a racket. The gang operates out of Otrebus Delagia's house. He's their leader, but is never seen in public. He lets his henchmen do all the dirty work for him."
(If you are doing the Thieves Guild quest 'The Eye of Argonia'):
  • Eye of Argonia:
"Hmmph. Use your head, %PCName. Use your head."
(If Disposition ≥ 80):
"I probably should let you find this out on your own, but Cap'n Fentus is playing his tricks. There is no Eye of Argonia. This whole job is just a test. And Ephaie Calicca? She's Fentus' old friend from his Navy days, so she's most likely in on this. I reckon Fentus wants to see how you can handle a tricky situation. But do humor our old captain, won't you?"
"You'll find her in the basement of the Howling Noose tavern in Firewatch."
"Look for him in Vivec. You'll find him in the basement of Simine Fralinie's bookstore in the Foreign Quarter."
"He's got a cover job in Almas Thirr. Look for him at the Limping Scrib tavern."
  • price on your head:
"Well, word on the street is that you've got about %PCCrimeLevel gold on your head. As you're a Thieves Guild member in good standing, I should be able to fix that for %CrimeGoldDiscount gold. Sound fair to you?" (See vanilla choices and responses)
(If you have no bounty):
"Trying to be funny? That's not a problem for you now."
"I heard she was put in charge of restoring the Thieves Guild chapter in Andothren."
"You can find her in Balmora, at the South Wall Cornerclub."
"It's an Indoril town to the south-southeast, known for its brewing tradition. They don't like outlanders like you and me. Yes, even me. Anyone coming from Old Ebonheart is an outlander in their book."

Thieves Guild: Facing Eviction[edit]

  • Greetings:
"In need of a job? Good. I have an urgent one for you, %PCRank. I need your help to settle Nelara's debt."
(If you have a bounty):
"In need of a job? Good. I have an urgent one for you, %PCRank. I need your help to settle Nelara's debt. Though perhaps we should take care of that price on your head first, huh?"
"Come back to me when Nelara's debt has been settled."
(If you killed Nelara):
"I told you I'd kill you if I ever saw you again, %PCName." Goodbye (Disposition -30, Fight set to 100, Cap'n Fentus' Fight set to 90, and Yggulf the Mute's Fight set to 90)
  • jobs:
"In need of a job? Good. I have an urgent one for you, %PCRank. I need your help to settle Nelara's debt."
  • Nelara's debt:
"First off, let's make one thing clear. We might be thieves, but we're also citizens of Old Ebonheart. We care for our city and its people and their well-being. Especially the poor people of the east side. As far as I'm concerned, they're under the Guild's protection. Under my protection. Now one of them has contacted us for help. I must warn you that there's no reward to be gained from this job. If anything, you might lose a few coins. Even with that knowledge: are you willing to help?"
  • Yes.:
"Good. As I said Nelara needs our help. We have a rival gang here in the city, Delagia's gang, led by Otrebus Delagia -- a mobster from Cyrodiil. He and his gang seek only to exploit the poor of Old Ebonheart. They own some of the houses here on the east side. Nelara is one of their tenants. She hasn't been able to pay her rent and is now facing eviction... or worse. I want you to go to her and find a way to help her." (Disposition +5)
  • Continue:
"A word of warning before you leave. The gang might be a bunch of thugs, but they have the law on their side. They might try to provoke you to get a violent reaction out of you. That's not something I want you to do. We thieves should use our heads, not our fists. If you're not cunning enough to handle this without resorting to violence, then it's better to just give up. Keep that in mind. Return to me when Nelara's debt has been settled."
  • No.:
"You're both greedy and useless then." Goodbye (Disposition -10)
"Nelara still needs our help. Her debt isn't settled yet."
"You've managed to settle the debt? If that's true, you should let Nelara know of it. Come back after you've done that."
"The debt has been settled! You've done a good deed, %PCName, and earned my respect. However... I'm afraid this won't be the last we've heard of Delagia's gang. The next time they'll cause trouble, I'll be sure to call on you for help." (Disposition +15, Thieves Guild Reputation +5)
  • Nelara asked me to thank you. She also called you 'your highness'.:
"She called me that, did she? I blame it on the name of this inn of ours. You know... the Empress Katariah. Nelara probably thought she was being witty calling me 'her highness'. I wouldn't overthink it if I were you, %PCName... Oh, I almost forgot. I originally told you that there wouldn't be a reward for this job. Well, here's a Scroll of Ekash's Locksplitter nonetheless. You've earned it. Now, talk to Fentus if you want a new job." (Disposition +5, and you receive a Scroll of Ekash's Lock Splitter)
  • What about a reward?:
"Well, if memory serves, I originally told you that there wouldn't be a reward for this job. Here's a Scroll of Ekash's Locksplitter nonetheless. You've earned it. Now, talk to Fentus if you want a new job." (Disposition +5, and you receive a Scroll of Ekash's Lock Splitter)
  • Glad to be of help.:
"Thank you again, %PCName. Oh, and I almost forgot.
(If you killed Norri the Crow, Pulso Pollex, or Gura gra-Lagrob):
"You attacked the gang members? We are thieves, %PCName. We are not murderers. This was not supposed to happen. Your foolish actions will only spell trouble for the Guild. How could you be this stupid? Leave me. Talk to Fentus. He might have a job for you." Goodbye (Disposition -25, Thieves Guild Reputation -2)
(If you killed Medemilian Rane):
"You killed Medemilian Rane? We are thieves, %PCName. We are not murderers. This was not supposed to happen. Your foolish actions will only spell trouble for the Guild. How could you be this stupid? Leave me. Talk to Fentus. He might have a job for you." Goodbye (Disposition -25, Thieves Guild Reputation -2)
(If you killed Otrebus Delagia):
"You killed Otrebus Delagia? We are thieves, %PCName. We are not murderers. This was not supposed to happen. Your foolish actions will only spell trouble for the Guild. How could you be this stupid? Leave me. Talk to Fentus. He might have a job for you." Goodbye (Disposition -25, Thieves Guild Reputation -2)
(If you killed Otrebus Delagia, Medemilian Rane, and Norri the Crow):
"You killed Delagia and his henchmen? I didn't want a blood bath!
"You handled that horribly, %PCName. Don't remind me."
(If you have been expelled from the Thieves Guild):
"Make amends first, %PCName. Then we can talk."
(If you killed Nelara):
"You n'wah. You killed Nelara, didn't you? No... I don't care to hear the twisted reasoning behind your actions. Get out of my city, you scum. If I ever see you here again, I will kill you with my own hands. You're no longer part of the Guild." Goodbye (Disposition -85, Fight +5, you are expelled from the Thieves Guild)

Thieves Guild: Infiltrating the Gang[edit]

  • Greetings:
"Otrebus Delagia and his gang need to be dealt with for good. I've got a plan which involves you, %PCName, but you might not like it... I want you to join Delagia's gang."
"After you have managed to join Delagia's gang, you can destroy it from the inside. Come back when the deed is done."
(If you were arrested during the quest):
"The Guild has no future in Old Ebonheart... We've lost... I have no more jobs for you. And neither does Fentus."
  • jobs:
"Otrebus Delagia and his gang need to be dealt with for good. I've got a plan which involves you, %PCName, but you might not like it... I want you to join Delagia's gang."
  • join Delagia's gang:
"Delagia's gang is like a serpent that's constricting our town. Cut off the head, the serpent dies. That head is the gang's leader Otrebus Delagia, but getting to him is easier said than done. No one gets to see Otrebus Delagia unless they are a member of the gang. Which means that for this job you have to become a member. I want you to go to their base, talk to Medemilian Rane and join the gang. Tell them you're a traitor who has defected from the Thieves Guild."
  • And then?:
"They'll no doubt make you do some of their own dirty work for them. Do what you must... within reason. You have an impressive skillset, %PCName. Use that to prove yourself to them. Eventually, I'm sure, Otrebus Delagia will want to talk to you in person." (Also see 'I don't like this plan' choice)
  • And when I'm face to face with Otrebus Delagia, then what?:
"I leave it up to you, %PCName. I say this fully aware that I'm placing a huge burden on you. But it is your call. Do what you think best. I don't think Delagia can be easily persuaded to leave Old Ebonheart, not without a very real threat of personal violence or some sort of leverage against him. You might find out a piece of evidence that could be used to throw him and his gang into prison, and use that to persuade him into making a deal. Good luck, %PCName." (Disposition +5)
  • I don't like this plan.:
"I know... I know. It's risky. But you are the only one who can do this. You are relatively new in this town. They wouldn't believe it for a second if anyone of us older members tried to play the role of a traitor to the Guild. And, frankly, you have skills unlike most thieves I've met. You are our best bet..." (Disposition -5)
  • Why can't I just outright go and kill them all?:
"If it were just your neck on the line, I wouldn't stop you, even though I doubt you could fight them all and live. But think of the consequences. Delagia's gang have friends and sympathizers in high places -- just ask anyone living in the west side of town. To them Otrebus Delagia is just a businessman and we are just vermin gnawing at the roots of his success. Attacking the gang outright without a plan would see us all in jail and end the Guild in Old Ebonheart." (Disposition -5, go back to other choices)
(If your Level ≥ 10):
"If it were just your neck on the line, I wouldn't stop you. I don't doubt your abilities: I'm sure you could kill any one of them in one-on-one combat.
(If your Level ≥ 20):
"If it were just your neck on the line, I wouldn't stop you. I don't even doubt your ability to kill them all: you could very well fight them all and live.
(If you have a bounty):
"Let me clear your bounty first... Now. Delagia's gang is like a serpent that's constricting our town.
(If your bounty is > 1000):
"Before you can do this job though, you should get rid of that price on your head. I can help you with that."
(If Otrebus Delagia is already dead before the quest):
"Well, you already did what you did. Delagia's dead."
"Come back when you've infiltrated the gang and dealt with Otrebus Delagia once and for all."
(If you convinced Otrebus Delagia to leave the city):
"You negotiated with Otrebus Delagia? And you managed to persuade him and his gang to leave Old Ebonheart... They'll return to Cyrodiil? This is... this is... astounding! You have ended this conflict without bloodshed. Thanks to your silver tongue the people of Old Ebonheart can breathe a little easier. You have done our city a great service." (Disposition +25, Thieves Guild Reputation +5, see 'Continue' choice below)
(If Otrebus Delagia is dead):
"Otrebus Delagia is dead? Then the gang is finished. Individual gang members might still cause us some trouble, but without Delagia's leadership they can't pose a real threat. I trust that you did what you did because you had to. The people of Old Ebonheart can breathe a little easier now thanks to you." (Disposition +5, Thieves Guild Reputation +5, the Ebonheart Bellman article 'OTREBUS DELAGIA FOUND DEAD' is added to the newspaper spawner, see 'Continue' choice below)
(If Otrebus Delagia, Pulso Pollex, Norri the Crow, and Gura gra-Lagrob are dead):
"Otrebus Delagia is dead? And all his thug enforcers, too? Then the gang is finished. I trust that you did what you did because you had to. The people of Old Ebonheart can breathe a little easier now thanks to you." (Disposition +5, Thieves Guild Reputation +5, the Ebonheart Bellman article 'GANG WAR IN OLD EBONHEART' is added to the newspaper spawner)
  • Continue:
(If you didn't help Nelara):
"You've done excellent work, %PCName. I must admit that when I first met you, I didn't think much of you. I mistook you for an errant rogue -- a selfish rascal like Antio. But you have, effectively, saved the Guild. I am sorry for misjudging you, %PCName. Here. Take these as a reward." (You receive 1 Master's Lockpick and 1 Master's Probe, see 'Continue' choice below)
(If you helped Nelara and you are a man):
"You've done excellent work, %PCName. I must admit that when I first met you, I didn't think much of you. I mistook you for an errant rogue -- a selfish rascal like Antio. But then you saved Nelara. And now you have, effectively, saved the Guild. I am sorry for misjudging you, %PCName. You truly are a man of the Guild. Here. Take these as a reward." (You receive 3 Master's Lockpick and 2 Master's Probe, see 'Continue' choice below)
(If you helped Nelara and you are a woman):
"You've done excellent work, %PCName. I must admit that when I first met you, I didn't think much of you. I mistook you for an errant rogue -- a selfish rascal like Antio. But then you saved Nelara. And now you have, effectively, saved the Guild. I am sorry for misjudging you, %PCName. You truly are a woman of the Guild. Here. Take these as a reward." (You receive 3 Master's Lockpick and 2 Master's Probe)
  • Continue:
(If Antio Florane is alive):
"Now... I've understood that Fentus wants to see you for more jobs."
(If Antio Florane is dead):
"We have no more jobs for you, %PCName. You should talk to ringleaders in other towns."
(If S'varr and/or Otrebus Delagia are dead):
"I heard you killed S'varr. When I told you to infiltrate the gang, I thought you'd know better than to cross certain lines... S'varr didn't have to die. You are a murderer, %PCName... and even if you saved the Guild, I can't help but to loathe you." (Disposition -20, Thieves Guild Reputation -5, the Ebonheart Bellman article 'GANG WAR IN OLD EBONHEART' is added to the newspaper spawner)
  • Continue:
(If Antio Florane is alive):
"Now... I've understood that Fentus wants to see you for more jobs."
(If Antio Florane is dead):
"We have no more jobs for you, %PCName. You should talk to ringleaders in other towns."
(If you got arrested during the quest):
"Oh, %PCName... You handled this job worse than what I had thought possible. You've landed the Guild in hot water by dragging the guards into this. We have to go underground... or even leave the city altogether. I don't have any more jobs for you. And neither does Fentus. We've lost." Goodbye (Disposition -25, Thieves Guild Reputation -5)
"We've lost."

Thieves Guild: An Empress' Ransom[edit]

  • Greeting:
(Once you have exited the Raathim Ancestral Tomb):
"They are here for the Death Mask of Empress Katariah. Give it to them, %PCName." Goodbye
"Let's get back to the inn. We'll talk there." Goodbye
(Once you have given the Death Mask of Empress Katariah to the guards):
"You found the Death Mask of Empress Katariah. You saved us, %PCName."
(If you refused to give the mask to the guards):
"Traitor!" Goodbye (Disposition -75)
  • Death Mask of Empress Katariah:
"The Imperial government in Old Ebonheart values its image more than keeping a couple of old thieves jailed. If we had the Death Mask, we could... use it to bargain freedom for Fentus and myself. I'm sure... or at least I hope... they couldn't say no to such a prestigious artifact, if you manage to find it."
  • Where is the mask?:
"When Empress Katariah died her body was brought here, to the city of her ancestors. She was buried in the Raathim Ancestral Tomb. That tomb has remained hidden and all but forgotten for over two hundred years, so the mask has to be in there still."
  • And where's the tomb?:
"Deep underneath the catacombs of the Grand Chapel of Talos. There is a secret entrance there. Those who recognize the banner of House Raathim may find a way to open the entrance. But... the tomb is protected. Legend says that the lithomancers of old placed a guardian statue at the entrance of the tomb proper. It won't allow anyone who's not of Raathim blood to enter."
  • How do you know all this?:
"I learned all this from my mother, who learned it from her mother and so on. It is my family legacy. I am Moranie of House Raathim. Empress Katariah was the older sister of my great-great-grandmother."
  • You're royalty then?:
"Do I look like royalty to you, %PCName? I may have the blood of witch-kings and empresses flowing in my veins, but the branch I belong to has long since become impoverished, disenfranchised and forgotten. I have no claim to any throne. I was born a guttersnipe who grew up to be a one-eyed thief. I'm not royalty any more than you are." (See next choice below)
  • How am *I* supposed to get into the tomb?:
"You are not of Raathim blood, %PCName. But... if you had something of Raathim blood with you, you might be able to bypass the tomb's guardian. Wait a moment, please... Nchhh..."
  • Continue:
"[Moranie removes her right eye from its socket. She hands it through the bars to you. You notice it's made of some sort of crystal with blood circulating inside it. It glows faintly.]" (You receive Moranie's Enchanted Eye)
  • Continue:
"With that eye on you... I hope... You should be able to get into the Raathim Ancestral Tomb. Go to the catacombs under the Grand Chapel of Talos. You can access the catacombs unseen from the western sewers. Look for an empty, unmaintained tomb with the wolf banner and two unlit torches. There is a secret mechanism there, I'm not quite sure what, but it will open the way inside."
  • Continue:
"Once you leave here, I'll let the guards know that we'll soon have the Death Mask and are willing to give it to the Empire in exchange for our freedom. Please find it and don't get yourself arrested or killed. Godspeed, %PCName. You're our only hope."
(If you already have the mask):
  • I already have it. Look.:
"You already have it? How in Oblivion did you manage that? You have saved us, %PCName! Go and give it to one of the guards now. It's our ticket out of this place." Goodbye
"Once you leave here, I'll let the guards know that we'll soon have the Death Mask and are willing to give it to the Empire in exchange for our freedom. Please find it and don't get yourself arrested or killed. Godspeed, %PCName. You're our only hope."
"You're back! But where's the mask?" Goodbye
"You're back! And you have the mask! You have saved us, %PCName! Go and give it to one of the guards now. It's our ticket out of this place." Goodbye
"Thanks to you Cap'n Fentus and myself were freed and the Guild is no longer hunted by the guards. I knew they couldn't say no to the mask! I'm sure it will be put on display somewhere in the Ebon Tower. I also hear that Medemilian Rane was promptly thrown into the dungeons for feeding the guards "falsified evidence", so he got what was coming to him. Once again, you have my gratitude, %PCName." (Disposition +15, Thieves Guild Reputation +5)
  • I saved you. How about a reward? / You're welcome.:
"You can keep my enchanted eye. It will allow you to gain access to the ancestral tomb again, if you want to. I'm sure my ancestors left behind all sorts of treasures that are still awaiting to be unearthed." (See 'What now?' choice below)
(If you already had the mask before the quest):
"Here, you can take my enchanted eye. It will allow you to gain access to the ancestral tomb again, if you want to. I'm sure my ancestors left behind all sorts of treasures that are still awaiting to be unearthed." (You receive Moranie's Enchanted Eye)
  • What now?:
"We have no more jobs for you, %PCName. Fitz-Fitz in Firewatch, Shei in Andothren and Gordol the Scrivener in Almas Thirr might have something to offer, unless you've worked for them already. However, before you leave, Cap'n Fentus wanted to talk to you. The old captain is finally retiring and he wished to say farewell to you. He's waiting at the docks."
"You did well finding the Death Mask. I believe it's now on display in the Palace of the Ebon Tower."
(If you stole the mask from Ebon Tower):
"Ha! You managed to steal it again? Good on you, %PCName."
  • Delagia's gang:
(If Otrebus Delagia is dead):
"I'm sure you recall Medemilian Rane? It seems that after you dealt with the gang that rat went and talked to the guards instead of skipping town. He's given them his account of how the Guild murdered Otrebus Delagia. That's not entirely inaccurate, of course, but he also linked us to the killing of Karandia Corrux, the silk merchant." (See 'Continue' choice below)
(If the whole gang is dead):
"I'm sure you recall Medemilian Rane? It seems that after you dealt with the gang that rat went and talked to the guards instead of skipping town. He's given them his account of how the Guild murdered Otrebus Delagia and the other gang members. That's not entirely inaccurate, of course, but he also linked us to the killing of Karandia Corrux, the silk merchant." (See 'Continue' choice below)
(If you convinced Otrebus Delagia to leave):
"I'm sure you recall Medemilian Rane? It seems that after you dealt with the gang that rat went and talked to the guards instead of leaving the city like he should have. He's given them some kind of evidence that ties the Guild to the killing of Karandia Corrux, the silk merchant." (See 'Continue' choice below)
(If S'varr is dead):
"I'm sure you recall Medemilian Rane? It seems that after you dealt with the gang that rat went and talked to the guards instead of skipping town. He's given them some kind of false evidence that ties the Guild to the killing of Karandia Corrux, the silk merchant. He also told the guards that it was the Guild that ordered S'varr's death..."
  • Continue:
"Cap'n Fentus and myself are the leaders of the guild here, so we're the ones taking the fall for this. And thieves like us... we've got other crimes to answer for, too, that will be unearthed when the investigation starts. Fentus has all but given up hope and I don't blame him. Our future is looking rather grim, %PCName."
  • I can break you out of there!:
"If that were possible we would have broken out of here already, %PCName. But there's no escaping from this cell, I'm afraid. Not this time." (Go back to other choices, and see 'Surely you must have a plan?' choice below)
  • Where's Medemilian Rane? I'll silence that rat for good.:
"I don't know where he is. Somewhere protected, I'm sure. But killing him would solve nothing." (Go back to other choices, and see 'Surely you must have a plan?' choice below)
  • If I turned myself in, then maybe they'd free you?:
"No, you must not! The guards wouldn't let us go even if you surrendered and told them everything. That's not the way to resolve this." (Also go back to other choices)
  • Surely you must have a plan?:
"Well... not a plan... More of a grasp at a straw that most likely won't work. It involves the lost Death Mask of Empress Katariah."
"The gang's done, thanks to you. I hear Medemilian Rane rots in the Legion dungeons."
"With Otrebus Delagia gone and Medemilian Rane behind bars, the gang is no more. You did this city and the Guild a great service, %PCName."
  • House Raathim:
"Go to the tomb. See what's left of my ancestors' glory days. The branch I belong to has long since waned and withered and the family tree itself is rooted in poison and decay. Everyone of that house is doomed from birth, one way or the other."
(If Disposition ≥ 40):
"You saw their tomb. What is left of my ancestors. They were once mighty and now they are dust. In their glory days none could've predicted their fall. I wonder if it's the same for the Septim Empire. How long will the walls and towers of this city last? Maybe its end is near, but we are failing to see the signs."
  • price on your head:
"Nothing I can do right now, is there?" (Disposition -5)
