The Lore Reference Project is a project aimed at aimed at auditing our existing pages, providing citations where needed and removing or cleaning up unsupportable information used in the Lore namespace, to prevent issues such as validity and accuracy of sources from hiding among perfectly valid information in Lore.
Project Overview[edit]
The wiki's use of references in Lore has changed greatly in recent years. Currently, many of the references used in Lore range from inadequate to highly incomplete. This includes usage of the "Events of [Game]" format, and use of unsourced statements interspersed with sourced statements. In addition, many older pages have no references at all, which has led to incorrect information being included over the years. The games overall are widely available, and many of the text files of the games are easily searchable meaning that documentation should be fairly easy. This project aims to provide a list of tasks which need to be completed to bring the Lore references up to par with the standards we have already set forth for the namespace. If you want to help out, add your name to the Project Members list, and please make sure to observe the project guidelines below.
Project Guidelines[edit]
To achieve consistent quality in terms of information and layout, the LRP guidelines should be followed as closely as possible. We realize that the complexity of the namespace can require unique choices, (e.g. stating that Dawnstar exists in the province of Skyrim might not need a source, or stating that Oblivion Gates appeared during the Oblivion crisis might appropriately use "Events of Oblivion" as a reference), and that is perfectly all right – just make sure to leave a message explaining your choice on the article's talk page. Also, when in doubt, please ask your questions on the project talk page.
Please choose your area of expertise:
- Involves references from games where the text files are not easily accessible to the average editor. This may include actually playing the game and tracking down the quotation in dialogue. Games include: Arena, Daggerfall, most of the Side Games of the series (This section includes some more modern games, like Pinball and VSE, as they aren't easily searchable).
- Involves references from the more modern games, where the dialogue, quests, books, is easily searchable via CSList and this information is tied directly in the database to who says the statement and conditions therein. Games include Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim and Blades.
- Involves references from modern Online games where the text file is readily available, but the text doesn't necessarily tie easily to a quest, NPC or location based on the files. This may actually include playing the game and trying to find where the line in question is said. Games include ESO and Legends.
Task List[edit]
Non-Searchable Games[edit]
- Arena: The game itself is readily available, but the text files aren't. This will require actually playing the game to figure out who says what and under what conditions.
- Daggerfall: The game and text files are available, but the files don't tie dialogue to specific NPCs or locations. This will require actually playing the game to figure out who says what and under what conditions.
- Shadowkey: The game is not readily available.
- Battlespire:
- Stormhold: The game is not readily available.
- Dawnstar: The game is not readily available.
- Redguard:
- Pinball: The game is readily available.
- Skyrim Very Special Edition: The game is readily available.
Modern Single Player Games[edit]
- Morrowind: The game is readily available and all text is listed on CSList. Some of the more general dialogue may require access to the Construction Set to figure out the conditions of its use.
- Oblivion: The game is readily available and all text is listed on CSList. Some of the more general dialogue may require access to the Construction Set to figure out the conditions of its use.
- Skyrim: The game is readily available and all text is listed on CSList. Some of the more general dialogue may require access to the Creation Kit to figure out the conditions of its use. Note: Creation Club content is not listed in CSList and will require actually owning the content itself and use of the Creation Kit.
- Blades: The game is readily available and the text files can be made available to editors on request. The text files specifically state where each bit of text is used.
Modern Online Games[edit]
- ESO: The game is readily available and the text files are all stored on ESOFiles, but the text does not specifically tie to where it is being used. May require actually playing some of the game to figure out exactly where things are said.
- Legends: The game is readily available, and the text is available to editors on request, but the dialogue does not tie directly to people easily. May require actually playing some of the game to figure out exactly where things are said.
- Castles:

NPC Dialogue[edit]
Much of the NPC dialogue for these games depends on circumstances. As such, it may require you to have completed a quest, reached a certain destination or performed some sort of action prior to receiving this dialogue. This should not be spelled out in the reference, but should be present on the gamespace page for the NPC in question. It is highly encouraged that if you search and find this dialogue and it is not already present on the gamespace page for that NPC, that you add it to said page, listing the conditions required for it to appear, if possible. NPC Dialogue can be cited as "Dialogue of [NPC Name]". If you wish to add the quest they say it in, or the game they say it in, that is acceptable but not actually required.
Location Text (UI Descriptions, Loading Screens, etc)[edit]
Much of the location based text is static, so it shouldn't require too much searching to find. You may, however, need to be on a certain quest to access a specific location, and many of the locations in games like Arena are randomly generated from a list of names. Be careful assigning references to such locations, as it might not be accurate given later games. Location text should be cited specifying where it is found, for example "Loading screen text for [Place] in [Game]" or "[UI description of [Place] in [Game]".
Item Descriptions[edit]
Item Descriptions are static and attached directly to the item, so they should be easy to find, provided you can find the item. They are, however, often tied directly to quests or other in-game occurrences, meaning it can take a long amount of gameplay to receive it. Theoretically all items in a game are present on a list somewhere, with the descriptions listed. If this isn't the case, you should add said item and description to said list, and link the reference to that page as such: "Description of [Item] in [Game]".
[edit]
Quest-related text, such as journal entries or quest-related dialogue should be included on the relevant quest page. Quests should be cited by name, for example "Events of [Quest Name] in [Game]".
