Galmar Stone-Fist is a fierce, veteran Nord warrior who is the housecarl of Ulfric Stormcloak and the general of the Stormcloak uprising. In his younger years, Galmar fought for the Imperial Legion at the frontlines of the Great War, along with rebellion leader Ulfric Stormcloak and Rikke, the latter now a Legate in the Legion and the right hand of Galmar and Ulfric's archenemy, General Tullius. Galmar is located in the Palace of the Kings within Windhelm, where he initially spends all of his time at Ulfric's side, often discussing war strategies and ethics. When Liberation of Skyrim is initiated, he will be your commander-in-charge and will be located at various key outposts of the Stormcloak rebellion, preparing assaults on the Empire's strategic holdings across Skyrim. He was supposed to sleep and eat, but a bug causes him to spend his entire time looking at the strategy map in the northwestern chamber.
He wears a full set of Stormcloak officer armor, including boots, bracers and the trademark helmet. In combat he relies on a two-handed iron battleaxe. He only carries a spare belted tunic which he was supposed to wear while sleeping.
Despite his efforts during the Great War, things changed when Emperor Titus Mede II surrendered to the Aldmeri Dominion and the worship of Talos was banned in Skyrim. Galmar began to look down on both the Empire and the Thalmor with white-hot hatred. After you have joined the Stormcloaks, when asked about his reasons for joining the war against the Legion: "Reasons? Since when does a man need a reason to protect his family, to defend his homeland? It's the damn outlanders and Empire that need the reasons." You can then question him about Skyrim's long lasting relations with the Empire: "Not this Empire. The world's better without it. Certainly Skyrim is. I fought in the Imperial army in the War against the Dominion. I bled and spilt blood for the Empire. And for what? The Empire to bend its knee before those evil elf bastards? Signing a treaty meant to kill the heart of the Empire itself. To deny Talos? No. I will have no part of any such Empire. And I will gladly gut anyone who says otherwise." You can also ask him directly if he opposes all non-Nord races: "I oppose tyranny. I oppose those who tell me how to live, what to think, and what to believe. I'm a man. Skyrim is man's homeland. That's a fact. A fact I'm proud of. There's no shame in that. Read your history." Lastly, you can ask him about the aim for the war: "First we'll kick the Thalmor and their bloody Imperial puppets out of the country. Then we'll rebuild Skyrim into the land she once was. When we are done with that, we will take our army to the Dominion, and show those pointy-eared bastards not every man is fit to be their slave."

Joining the Stormcloaks[edit]
When you visit the Palace of the Kings in Windhelm for the very first time, you will immediately overhear Galmar and rebellion leader Ulfric Stormcloak having a hefty debate on what to do with Whiterun neutral leader Balgruuf the Greater:
Galmar: "Balgruuf won't give us a straight answer."
Ulfric: "He's a true Nord. He'll come around."
Galmar: "Don't be so sure of that. We've intercepted couriers from Solitude. The Empire's putting a great deal of pressure on Whiterun."
Ulfric: "And what would you have me do?"
Galmar: "If he's not with us, he's against us."
Ulfric: "He knows that. They all know that."
Galmar: "How long are you going to wait?"
Ulfric: "You think I need to send Balgruuf a stronger message."
Galmar: "If by message you mean shoving a sword through his gullet."
Ulfric: "Taking his city and leaving him in disgrace would make a more powerful statement, don't you think?"
Galmar: "So we're ready to start this war in earnest then?"
Ulfric: "Soon."
Galmar: "I still say you should take them all out like you did Deadking Torygg."
Ulfric: "Torygg was merely a message to the other Jarls. Whoever we replace them with will need the support of our armies."
Galmar: "We're ready when you are."
Ulfric: "Things hinge on Whiterun. If we can take the city without bloodshed all the better. But if not..."
Galmar: "The people are behind you."
Ulfric: "Many I fear still need convincing."
Galmar: "Then let them die with their false kings."
Ulfric: "We've been soldiers a long time. We know the price of freedom. The people are still weighing things in their hearts."
Galmar: "What's left of Skyrim to wager?"
Ulfric: "They have families to think of."
Galmar: "How many of their sons and daughters follow your banner? We are their families."
Ulfric: "Well put, friend. Tell me, Galmar, why do you fight for me?"
Galmar: "I'd follow you into the depths of Oblivion, you know that."
Ulfric: "Yes, but why do you fight? If not for me, what then?"
Galmar: "I'll die before elves dictate the fates of men. Are we not one in this?"
Ulfric: "I fight for the men I've held in my arms, dying on foreign soil. I fight for their wives and children, who's [sic] names I heard whispered in their last breaths. I fight for we few who did come home, only to find our country full of strangers wearing familiar faces. I fight for my people impoverished to pay the debts of an Empire too weak to rule them, yet brands them criminals for wanting to rule themselves! I fight so that all the fighting I've already done hasn't been for nothing. I fight... because I must."
Galmar: "Your words give voice to what we all feel, Ulfric. And that's why you will be High King. But the day words are enough, will be the day when soldiers like us are no longer needed."
Ulfric: "I would gladly retire from the world were such a day to dawn."
Galmar: "Aye. But in the meantime, we have a war to plan."
Whether the player is Nord or non-Nord, taking part in the Stormcloak uprising begins with talking to Galmar in the Palace of the Kings to obtain your initiation rite. Galmar starts the conversation by saying, "Hmm. Helgen, eh? Ulfric told us quite the story. If you made it through all that, you're likely worth something to me." His next line will depend on your race:

All non-Nords races can then ask Galmar if he only accepts Nords, which will make him explain: "You mistake me. I'm not saying no - just wondering about your intentions. We're not looking for sellswords. The Stormcloaks need dedicated men and women who're devoted to the cause and willing to die for it." From that point forward, the initiation is the same for every race and Galmar is ready to hear your answer to his initial question. You can choose to explain you want to fight the Empire, and he will say: "Can't fault anyone for that! As long as you hate the Empire as much as I do, that I can work with." You can also tell him that Skyrim is your home, and he will reply: "Fair enough. But are you willing to die for your home?" If you concur, he will explain that there's a test before he will accept you: "All right. But before I can put you to use, I need to know how much you can take. I have a little test for you." If you ask about the nature of the quest, he will say: "The kind men use to measure themselves." If you, however, blindly agree to take the test, he will gladly explain: "That's what I like to hear. So long as you can back up those words with steel." Both options lead to the task: "I'm sending you to Serpentstone Island. If you survive, you pass. If you die, well, you weren't going to be much use to me anyway." He will then explain what you must do at Serpentstone Isle: "It's where men have tested their mettle for ages. There's a strange rock formation, built by the ancients. Something about that place attracts the Ice Wraiths. You kill an Ice Wraith out there, and I'll have all the proof I need about you."
At this point, four options are available:
"Does every recruit have to do this?"
"Only the ones I'm not sure about. This will prove your abilities, but more importantly, it will prove your commitment."
"I'm going alone?"
"Not so sure of yourself after all? At the end of the day, every warrior is alone. Before you can stand next to your shield brother, you need to be able to stand on your own."
"I'm not sure about this."
"When you kill that Ice Wraith, then we'll talk about you becoming a Stormcloak."
"I'm off to kill that ice wraith."
"We'll see about that, won't we?"
If your character is below level 20, the bottom two options will net you a few potions of resist cold: "Here. Take this. You'll need it. Use it on the island. Don't lose it. That's all the help you're getting. Try not to die." He will then return to his discussions with Ulfric and will only say: "What? We've got nothing to talk about until you come back from Serpentstone Isle."
When you return from Serpentstone Isle, Galmar will be quite surprised: "You're alive. I owe Ulfric a drink. I have to admit, I didn't think we'd be seeing you again. I misjudged you. You're definitely Stormcloak material. It's time we made this official. You ready to take the Oath?" You can then ask him if he sent you to the island to die: "Not at all. That was as much a test of your abilities as it was your resolve. I wasn't sure your heart was in it. But you've proven me wrong. And I respect that. Now, if were done being sentimental, it's time for you to take the Oath." When you ask him to elaborate on the oath he will explain: "Before you're one of us, you must swear fealty to Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak, future High King of Skyrim. You must also pledge unswerving loyalty to your fellow Stormcloaks, to Skyrim and to her people." He will also explain why the oath is necessary: "You can stick a sword through an Imperial any day you want. But that doesn't make you a Stormcloak. We're not just fighting Imperials. We're fighting to restore Skyrim to her glory and give her the king she deserves." If you ask for a bit of time to consider, he will warn you: "Don't take too long figuring it out. Might mistake your hesitation for Imperial sympathies. Come back when you're committed to the cause, or go join the Legion. They're taking anyone with a pulse these days." When you finally accept he will say: "That's the spirit. By swearing this oath you become one of us. A hero/heroine of the people. A true son of Skyrim. A Stormcloak. Repeat after me. "I do swear my blood and honor to the service of Ulfric Stormcloak..." [...]"...Jarl of Windhelm and true High King of Skyrim."[...] "As Talos is my witness, may this oath bind me to death and beyond..."[...] "...even to my lord as to my fellow brothers and sisters in arms."[...]"All hail the Stormcloaks, the true sons and daughters of Skyrim!"" When all is said and done, he will hand you a full Stormcloak outfit with the words: "Now you're one of us. Which means you get to tag along on a little trip with me. Oh, and here. You're a Stormcloak now, you ought to look the part." With these words, the quest will end and your first task for the Stormcloaks, The Jagged Crown, will begin.
The Jagged Crown[edit]
An ancient Nordic verse reads: "Maw unleashing razor snow, Of dragons from the blue brought down, Births the walking winter's woe, The High King in his Jagged Crown." When you return from Serpentstone Isle, you will find Galmar trying to convince a doubtful Ulfric that acquiring the Jagged Crown will benefit the cause. Ulfric, tired of Jarls, moots and traditions, will doubt his housecarl, but will nevertheless send him on his way – and will, at the end of the conversation, order you to help claim the crown:
Ulfric: "Tell me again why we're wasting time and dwindling resources chasing a legend. We don't even know it exists!"
Galmar: "The Jarls are upset. They don't all support you."
Ulfric: "Damn the Jarls."
Galmar: "They demand the Moot."
Ulfric: "And damn the Moot! We should risk letting those milkdrinkers put Thorryg's [sic] woman on the throne? She'll hand Skyrim over to the elves on a silver plate."
Galmar: "All the more reason then. The crown would legitimize your claim."
Ulfric: "A crown doesn't make a king."
Galmar: "No, but this one..."
Ulfric: "If it even exists."
Galmar: "It exists. And it'll be the symbol of the righteousness of our cause. Think about it. The Jagged Crown! It heralds back to a time before jarls and moots. Back to the time when a king was a king because his enemies fell before him, and his people rose because they loved him. Skyrim needs that king. You will be that king, Ulfric. You must be."
Ulfric: "You're certain you've found it?"
Galmar: "When have I ever been false with you?"
Ulfric: "Fine. I'll send the Unblooded here with you. Fancy a crawl through a moldering dungeon to see if you can't stir up Galmar's Jagged Crown?"
Galmar: "It'll be there. You'll see."
After your initiation, Galmar will readily tell you about the legendary Jagged Crown and how to receive it: "I've found the final resting place of the Jagged Crown. Can you believe it? Well, I'm almost certain. We're headed to Korvanjund. But, if old King Borgas is indeed buried there, we're bound to run into trouble of some kind. Your fellow Stormcloaks are already assembling outside the tomb. I'll meet you there as soon as I'm finished up here." He will then explain further about the crown: "Have you not heard that ancient verse? 'Maw unleashing razor snow, Of dragons from the blue brought down, Births the walking winter's woe, The High King in his Jagged Crown.' Going way back to King Harald's time or even before, the High King always wore the Jagged Crown. It was the symbol of his might and power. The crown is made from the bones and teeth of ancient dragons, and it is said to contain a portion of the power of every king who has worn it. True or not, who would dare deny Ulfric's claim, when the legendary Jagged Crown sits upon his brow?" You can also ask him how he knows the crown is in Korvanjund: "It's true, the location of the crown was lost with King Borgas. After the Great Hunt killed him, while he was off on his damned Alessian campaigns. But legend holds, his body was secretly returned to Skyrim and buried with the crown. Its exact whereabouts lost in the following Wars of Succession. Through sources that shall remain nameless, I've tracked down what I believe to be the final resting place of King Borgas - Korvanjund. If the crown exists, it will be there." Lastly, he will admit the mission is quite dangerous: "Aye. The Great Hunt killed old King Borgas. Gods only know with what profane arts those elves cursed his remains. Curses notwithstanding, the tombs of kings are always full of traps to ward off grave robbers, are they not? But nothing a band of Stormcloaks can't handle, I assure you." With these words he will return to his strategy map, and will only say: "What? Get over with the rest of the men at Korvanjund.", "Korvanjund. Remember?" and "Don't wait around for me. I bet I'll beat you to Korvanjund even though you start first."
Galmar: "What's the situation?"
Soldier: "Cold as the inside of an ice wraith. That and some Imperials are camped out around the entrance, staying nice and warm around their fires."
Galmar: "Imperials? Well, if they're keeping themselves comfortable, let's slip in and send them to their graves that way."
They will then all laugh of the upcoming slaughter and Galmar will seek you out: "What's the Legion doing here? Damn Imperial spies... Well, should be fun for us, at least. They don't seem to know we're here yet. Ready to spill some Imperial blood for Skyrim?" Two options are available here. You can ask Galmar to wait so you can prepare, which will make him warn you: "Even the Imperials might eventually decide to patrol their perimeter. Get yourself ready!" When you say the word, he will say: "That's what I like to hear." He will then address the men: "Listen up. Those Imperials aren't here by coincidence. Their spies must've found out we know about the Crown, and they don't want us to have it. But they won't stand in our way. I know some of you are ex-legion and may know men on the other side. But remember this. They are the enemy now and they will not hesitate to kill you. Keep your wits about you and watch your shield brother's back. Ulfric Stormcloak is counting on us to bring him back that crown, and that's exactly what we're going to do." He will then draw his axe and take off at a running pace towards the ruin, saying: "Follow me. Quickly and quietly now. I want their guts on the ground before they even know we're here." When he arrives at the Korvanjund exterior, he will slash and smash his way through the legion soldiers and will not pause until everyone is dead. Before entering the ruin he will say: "That's the way I like it. Short and bloody. They never knew what hit them. But do not make the mistake of underestimating the Legion. Plenty of them are Nords same as us. We had the advantage of surprise this time, but things won't be so easy from here on out. Enough talk. Let's go kill some Imperials." He will then enter Korvanjund and his men will follow.
In Korvanjund Temple, Galmar will quickly notice the patrolling Imperial soldiers and seek cover. He will then whisper: "Pick a man and put him down. We attack on my signal. Time to show what you're really made of." His signal will be a shout, "For Skyrim!", followed by a surprise attack on the legionnaires. After the battle, he will proceed forward until he stops: "Gretta, Engar, stay and guard the entrance. We don't want any Imperial reinforcements taking us by surprise. The rest of you lot are with me." While two soldiers stay behind, Galmar will rush into the next chamber and fight the enemies. At the next entrance, he stops once again and engages in a discussion with his men:
Galmar: "I don't like the look of this. Perfect spot for an ambush. Ten to one they're just waiting for us on the other side."
Soldier: "But there isn't any other way through."
Galmar: "You sure about that? Then please, be my guest and go strolling on in there. We'll stay here and watch your back... Not so sure? Oh, then perhaps we should take a moment to look around a little, eh? You there, Unblooded, see if you can find another way through. We'll charge in to help as soon as we hear fighting."
The last order is aimed at you and if you wait too long, an impatient Galmar will help you out: "There may be some way to get through on the level above. Hurry!" and "Maybe you can find a way through somewhere above us." Whatever strategy you choose, Galmar will come rushing in when he hears a sound, and slash all Imperials without thinking twice. Before entering the western tunnel, he will warn the team: "Careful, boys. There's bound to be more up ahead." In the next room, a dead draugr will attract the attention of the Stormcloaks, including Galmar:
Soldier #1: "What in the nine holds is that?"
Soldier #2: "Draugr. Ain't you ever seen one before?"
Soldier #1: "No. And I'm not sure I'm better off for it now neither."
Galmar: "Steady. A few dusty bonewalkers aren't going to stop us anymore than the Imperials could. We're not leaving until we get what we came for. Now let's keep moving."
Galmar will then run to the entrance to Korvanjund Halls and enter. Once inside, he ignores all the dead draugr and Imperial soldiers and focuses on slaughtering the few survivors. Before long, he will arrive in a very special place and will comment:
Galmar: "Ah! The Hall of Stories... we must be getting close now."
Soldier #1: "Oh... I've heard of this. They say these walls show the history of the ancients who built this place."
Soldier #2: "Too bad we can't read these carvings. Who knows what secrets we'd uncover?"
Galmar: "One thing at a time. We're here for the Crown. Any of these carvings show a crown?"
He will then discover the dead Imperial soldiers in front of the puzzle door, cheerfully commenting: "Hmm, looks like this is as far as the Imperials got. Even if one of these pictures tells us where the Crown is, I'm betting we're going to have to find a way through that door. See what you can figure out, Unblooded. I'm going to check out these carvings over here. Let me know if you find something." When you pick up the ebony claw he will be puzzled: "Hmm... that looks like some kind of claw from a statue. I wonder what it's used for." Should you try the wrong combination and release the dart trap, he will shout: "Look out!" and follow it up with: "I wouldn't do that again unless you know for sure it's going to open." He will then suggest: "Looks like the door will open if we turn these rings the right way." and "Is there anything on the claw that might show how to open this door?" When you finally manage to unlock the gate, he will just say: "Good job!" While the gate lowers, he will warn his men: "Alright everyone! Keep your guard up. No telling what we'll find down here." The next room is yet another obstacle and Galmar will order his men to figure out how to open the next gate: "Come on, boys. Let's spread out and see what we've got. Unblooded, do what you do best. See if you can find some way to get that gate open." During your search, he will remain on the ground floor, barking: "How's it going, Unblooded? You find anything yet?", "Keep looking, Unblooded. There's got to be some way to get that thing open." or "You see a lever anywhere?" When you pull the handle, Galmar will be victorious at first, until several draugr enemies are released: "That's done it! Alright, boys, let's get moving. We've got more..." He will then suggest: "Steady now! They may be uglier than Imperials but they'll go down just the same." After the fight, he will say: "Let's hope that's the last of them. Come on, let's see what's down this way." He will then disappear into the final chamber, for the big fight against the remains of King Borgas.
In the crypt he will be oblivious to the remains of King Borgas sleeping in the throne and say, "That crown should be around here somewhere. Just keep an eye out for the bonewalkers..." If Ralof is in your party, he carelessly approaches the sleeping draugr, coffins will break and Galmar will angrily yell, "Ralof... get away from there, fool!" He will then rush to the podium and try to negotiate with the enemy: "If you don't mind king, we'll just be taking that crown of yours and be on our way." When the boss-leveled draugr draws his sword, he will attack with the words, "Have it your way. Let's get that crown men!" After the battle, he will say, "Alright, get the crown off that draugr!" When you have claimed the crown, he will give you one last order: "Get to Windhelm with the crown as quick as you can. Tell Ulfric he owes me a drink."
Battle for Whiterun[edit]
Once Jarl Balgruuf asks you to return Ulfric's axe, an attack on Whiterun is inevitable and Ulfric will have to make the decision. Galmar will do his very best to convince him that warfare is the wise choice, although Ulfric will be more than worried:
Ulfric: "You were right Galmar."
Galmar: "Again?"
Ulfric: "I'm in no mood to joke."
Galmar: "Give the word, my lord, and Whiterun is yours."
Ulfric: "Whiterun is only a means to an end."
Galmar: "I've toured our camps. We're ready, Ulfric... Whenever you are."
Ulfric: "Is any man ever ready to give the order that will mean the deaths of many."
Galmar: "No. But neither is every man able to give that order when he must. But you are that man, Ulfric. You've been that man before, and you'll be him again. And these men and women - they call themselves Stormcloaks because they believe in you... They're the meanest, toughest sons of bitches Skyrim has to offer. And they want this. They want this as much as you do. Perhaps they want it more."
Ulfric: "You're certain we're ready? Whiterun's army will no doubt be bolstered with Legionnares. And those walls around Whiterun are old, but they still stand."
Galmar: "We're ready. And I might be old myself, but I'll kick those damn walls down with my bare feet! - if you would only ask me to do it!"
Ulfric: "And I'm sure you could do it, too. Alright. This is it."
Galmar: "Yes!"
Ulfric: "Send the word. "A new day is dawning and the sun rises over Whiterun.""
Galmar: "Aye, and the sons of Skyrim will greet that dawn teeth and swords flashing."
Ulfric: "So it begins."
After the conversation, Galmar will return to the strategy map and will only say: "We're taking the city. Meet the brothers gathering for the attack. Fight well or die well. Talos be with you." Meanwhile, the Stormcloaks will set up a military camp between Pelagia Farm and Honningbrew Meadery and you are told to show up for the attack. When you arrive, you will find Galmar addressing a crowd of soldiers:
"This is it men! They say that our cause is false and that we are nothing more than thieves, thugs and murderers! But no! We are farmers! We are craftsmen! We are sons and daughters of shopkeepers, maid servants and soldiers! We are the sons and daughters of Skyrim! And we have come this far because our cause is true. Because we fight as one. And because our hearts are bursting with anger! What we do here today, we do for our country! For all the true Nords of Skyrim! Whiterun's walls are tall, but they are old and crumbling, like the Empire whose Legion lines them. They've barricades to block us, but we'll tear through them and the Imperials behind them! Our objective is the drawbridge. If we can find a way to drop it, the city will be ours! Everyone on me. Let's show these Imperial milk drinkers what true Nords look like! Rrrrraaaaaarrrrr!!!!!"
After the speech and war cry, Galmar will draw his battleaxe and fearlessly run towards the Whiterun drawbridge, fighting the hordes of Whiterun Guards and Imperial soldiers trying to prevent the Stormcloaks from entering the city. Once inside, Galmar will fight his way through the burning streets, slowly making his way to the home of Jarl Balgruuf, Dragonsreach. Inside the palace, he will fight both Balgruuf and Irileth. When Balgruuf finally surrenders, Galmar will sheathe his sword and get in position, just when Vignar Gray-Mane enters the palace. He will then patiently hear them out:
Vignar: "Balgruuf!"
Balgruuf: "Vignar Gray-Mane! Your family was noticeably absent from the walls. Now I know why. Wouldn't a dagger in the back have sufficed?"
Vignar: "You think this is personal? The Empire has no place in Skyrim... not any more. And you? You have no place in Whiterun anymore."
Balgruuf: "A convenient position to hold now. But mark my words, old man, in the days to come, Ulfric will spread his rebellion thin. And what then? We need the Empire, as much as it needs us. We Nords are the Empire! Our blood built it. Our blood sustains it! You of all people should know that."
Vignar: "If this was my Empire, I'd be able to worship whoever I damned well pleased. You wish to see an Empire without Talos? Without its soul? We should be fighting those witch-elves, not bending knee to them. The Emperor is nothing more than a puppet of the Thalmor. Skyrim needs a High King who will fight for her, and Whiterun needs a Jarl who will do the same."
Balgruuf: "Tell me, Vignar. Was all this worth it? How many of those corpses lining our streets wear the faces of men who once called you friend? What about their families?"
Galmar: "Enough! Both of you! There is a burning city out there that needs a government."
Vignar: "He's right. Galmar, come, let us restore order."
Balgruuf: "This isn't over. You hear me you old fool! This isn't over! (to the player) And you. A Stormcloak? I'd thought better of you. You'll all come to regret this day."
After the conversation, and while Balgruuf is dragged away, Galmar will come over to you and say: "Get over to Windhelm. Tell Ulfric of our victory here." This ends the quest and starts Liberation of Skyrim.
Liberation of Skyrim[edit]
Liberation of Skyrim is an umbrella quest for several smaller quests, all leading towards victory for the Stormcloaks. Ulfric Stormcloak will hand you the objectives while Galmar will provide the quests. The order, or even the existence, of the possible ten quests can change depending on your choices during Season Unending. See this table for details.
When the quest is triggered, Galmar will be found in the Palace of the Kings, fully armed and ready for battle. As soon as Ulfric orders you to regain one of the possible eight holds, Galmar will travel all the way to the corresponding Stormcloak Camp and await your arrival.
Rescue from Fort Neugrad
When Ulfric asks you to liberate Falkreath hold, Galmar will show up in the snowy Falkreath Stormcloak Camp east of hold capital Falkreath, Galmar will be located in the easternmost tent, along with Thorygg Sun-Killer, busy studying a huge regional map of Skyrim. When you approach him they will let you in on the plan to conquer Falkreath, thus starting the quest Rescue from Fort Neugrad: "You're going to Fort Neugrad. They have some of our boys locked up there. But with a little luck, we can turn that to our advantage. I've sent some men to scout out the area. Meet them, see if you can't find a way to slip in, free our men, and take over the fort. They'll never suspect an attack from the inside. This won't be easy. But that's why I'm sending you. You got the grit to get this done?"
Compelling Tribute[edit]
Once you have taken over Fort Neugrad, you are told to report back to Ulfric for a new assignment. He will quickly tell you to help liberate the Reach, so travel to the Reach Stormcloak Camp northwest of hold capital Markarth where Galmar will be waiting for you: "Get over to Markarth. Rumor has it the Jarl's Steward, Raerek, is a faithful Talos worshipper, if not a true son of Skyrim - he still supports the Empire, after all. But, if confronted with proof of his belief, you might be able to 'persuade' him to aid our cause, indirectly of course. Wouldn't want to sully his reputation, would we? You'll need to be careful with this one. The Jarl's men won't look kindly on you rummaging through the steward's quarters." This starts the quest Compelling Tribute.
When you return from Markarth and Raerek with the news about a gold shipment to Solitude, Galmar will come up with a new plan: "Good job. I knew you'd come back with something for me. It just so happens, I've got some scouts along the road. Meet up with them, and together see if you can't overpower the caravan." After helping Ralof and the soldiers overtake the caravan, the quest will end and you will have to report back to Galmar who will thank you for the effort: "Well done! I'll send men with a wagon to collect our prize. We'll put the weapons to use here, and I'll send the coin back to Windhelm." After that, report in for another job, which will start the first of the Battle Quests.
A False Front[edit]
When Ulfric decides it is time to liberate Hjaalmarch, Galmar will travel to the Hjaalmarch Stormcloak Camp, northeast of the hold capital Morthal. Report for duty and he will immediately tell you the plan: "Need you to deliver some false orders to the Imperial Legate in Morthal. But first we need to get our hands on some Imperial orders to make the forgeries. The inns at Dragonbridge and Rorikstead are frequent stops for Imperial runners. See if you can't 'convince' one of those innkeepers to help you. One way or another, get me those documents. What do you say?" When you accept his quest he will bid you farewell and return to his strategy map. When you return to him with the documents he will say: "Good work! Let's see what you got. Hmm... They know more of our plans than I thought... Not good... Oh, what's this? Fort Snowhawk is in need of reinforcements... We'll make sure they won't be getting those... Give me a moment while I make a few, um, 'corrections' to these reports... There we go. Make sure those forged documents get to the Legate in Morthal. They should give them the wrong idea... and us the advantage." After your meeting with Legate Taurinus Duilis in Morthal, approaching Galmar at the camp will net you: "Good job! Ulfric was right about you. I'm glad to have you with us!" When you report for duty, he will have another battle quest ready before Hjaalmarch is under Stormcloak control, namely the Battle for Fort Snowhawk.
Battle Quests[edit]
As Liberation of Skyrim progresses, Ulfric Stormcloak will ask you to regain any holds still controlled by the Legion. This results in Galmar traveling around to the various camps in Skyrim, giving you an enemy held fort to conquer. All objectives are radiant versions of the same quest, and Galmar's dialogue will only differ slightly, although his location will.
Note that the amount of battle quests can change due to your changes during Season Unending.

After telling you the objective, Galmar will follow up with: "Meet the brothers preparing for the attack. Then join them in wiping out the Imperials. Once you prevail we will garrison the fort. What do you say? Can you do this?" If you say 'no' he will angrily respond: "I see. Well, make it quick, or do you have better things to do than fight for the people of Skyrim?"
If you accept the battle quest, Galmar will randomly say one of the following lines:
"Good. You've got real fire in you. I like that... Talos guide you."
"I knew I could count on you."
"Good. Don't die out there."
"We all have faith in you."
"Go with the Nine."
"Talos keep you."
"Don't screw this up."
"Good. And remember - keep the gods, and they'll keep you."
"Excellent. Put the fear of the Nine into those motherless dogs."
"That's what I wanted to hear. Good luck out there."
The Battle for Fort Hraggstad[edit]
When only Haafingar remains under Imperial control, Ulfric will promote you to Stormblade, and tell you to prepare for the final attack on Solitude. Galmar will now be found in the Haafingar Stormcloak Camp, waiting for your arrival. When you report for duty, he'll say, "You're going to the fort. Meet the brothers preparing for the attack. Then join them in wiping out the Imperials. Once you prevail we will garrison the fort." This will start the quest The Battle for Fort Hraggstad and it is the final battle quest you can do for the Stormcloaks.
When you report back after a job well done, Galmar will be overly excited as it is now time to hit the Imperial headquarters and capital, Solitude: "We're taking the city. Meet the brothers gathering for the attack. Fight well or die well. Talos be with you." This will start the final quest Battle for Solitude.
Battle for Solitude[edit]
During the attack on Solitude, Ulfric Stormcloak himself will fight alongside Galmar and the troops and will give a heroic speech just outside the city gates. Galmar will not make it in time for the speech, but will join you once you enter Solitude, hacking and slashing on the many waves of legionnaires protecting the Castle Dour. Only Galmar and Ulfric will follow you inside for the final showdown against Legate Rikke and General Tullius. While Tullius is due for an immediate execution, both Ulfric and Galmar will try and talk Rikke to her senses:
Ulfric: "Secure the door."
Galmar: "Already done."
Rikke: "Ulfric. Stop."
Ulfric: "Stop what? Taking Skyrim back from those who'd leave her to rot?"
Rikke: "You're wrong. Ulfric. We need the Empire. Without it Skyrim will assuredly fall to the Dominion."
Galmar: "You were there with us. You saw it. The day the Empire signed that damn treaty was the day the Empire died."
Ulfric: "The Empire is weak, obsolete. Look at how far we've come and with so little. When we're done rooting out Imperial influence here at home, then we will take our war to the Aldmeri Dominion."
Rikke: "You're a damn fool."
Galmar: "Stand aside woman. We've come for the General."
Rikke: "He has given up. But I have not."
Ulfric: "Rikke. Go. You're free to leave."
Rikke: "I'm also free to stay and fight for what I believe in."
Ulfric: "You're also free to die for it."
Rikke: "This is what you wanted? Shield brothers and sisters killing each other? Families torn apart? This is the Skyrim you want?!"
Galmar: "Damnit woman, stand aside."
Rikke: "That's not the Skyrim I want to live in."
Ulfric: "Rikke. You don't have to do this."
Rikke: "You've left me no choice... Talos preserve us."
During the entire conversation, you can talk to Galmar who will express a rare sadness about the thought of killing his old friend, Legate Rikke: "Always was a stubborn woman. She's not going to stand down." If you tell him to just kill her right away, he will be insulted: "You're a cold hearted bastard, aren't you?" He will, however, do what has to be done, including killing his old friend: "Aye, I'll hate it, but I'll do it if I have to." After the conversation, Rikke will draw her sword and the paralyzed Tullius will wake up and attempt to help her out, but to no avail. Soon after, Rikke lies dead and Tullius is on his knees. In his final moments, Tullius has a few truths to tell:
Ulfric: "This is it for you. Any last words before I send you to Oblivion?"
Tullius: "You realize this is exactly what they wanted."
Galmar: "What who wanted?"
Tullius: "The Thalmor. They stirred up trouble here. Forced us to divert needed resources and throw away good soldiers quelling this rebellion."
Ulfric: "It's a little more than a rebellion, don't you think?"
Galmar: "Heh."
Tullius: "We aren't the bad guys you know."
Ulfric: "Maybe not, but you certainly aren't the good guys."
Tullius: "Perhaps you're right. But then what does that make you?"
Ulfric: "You just said it yourself."
Galmar: "It makes us right."
Tullius: "And if I surrender?"
Ulfric: "The Empire I remember never surrendered."
Galmar: "That Empire is dead. And so are you."
Tullius: "So be it."
Galmar: "Just kill him and let's be done with it already."
Ulfric: "Come, Galmar. Where's your sense of the dramatic moment?"
Galmar: "By the gods! If it's a good ending to some damn story you're after - perhaps the Dragonborn should be the one to do it."
Ulfric: "Good point."
When Tullius meets his demise by either you or Ulfric, Galmar will encourage Ulfric to step into the courtyard and speak to the men:
Galmar: "Good. It's done."
Ulfric: "Well, I suppose some kind of speech is in order."
Galmar: "I'll go gather the men in the courtyard."
Ulfric: "And Elisif?"
Galmar: "Don't you worry about her. I've sent my best men to round her up."
Galmar: "And now, I present to you, Ulfric Stormcloak, hero of the people, liberator and High King of Skyrim!"
Ulfric: "I am indeed Ulfric Stormcloak, and at my side the man/woman we know as Stormblade, and the world knows as the Dragonborn. And indeed, there are many that call us heroes. But it is all of you who are the true heroes! It was you who fought a dying Empire who sunk its claws into our land, trying to drag us down with it. It was you who fought the Thalmor and their puppets who would have us deny our gods and our heritage. It was you who fought your kin who didn't understand our cause, who weren't willing to pay the price of our freedom. But more than that, it was you who fought for Skyrim, for our right to fight our own battles... To return to our glory and traditions, to determine our own future!"
Soldiers: "Huzzah!"
Ulfric: "And it is for these reasons that I cannot accept the mantle of "High King." Not until the Moot declares that title should adorn my shoulders will I accept it."
Soldier: "And what about Jarl Elisif?"
Ulfric: "Yes, what about the Lady Elisif? Will she put aside her personal hatred for me, and her misplaced love for the Emperor and his coin, so that the suffering of our people will end? Will she acknowledge that it is we Nord's who will determine Skyrim's future? Will she swear fealty to me, so all may know that we are at peace, and a new day has dawned?"
Elisif: "I do!"
Ulfric: "Then it is settled. The Jarl will continue to rule Solitude, I will garrison armies here to ward off Imperial attempts to reclaim the city. And in due time, the Moot will meet, and settle the claim to High King once and for all. There is much to do, and I need every able bodied man and woman committed to rebuilding Skyrim. A great darkness is growing, and soon we will be called to fight it, on these shores or abroad. The Aldmeri Dominion may have defeated the Empire, but it has not defeated Skyrim!"

Ulfric: "How'd I do?"
Galmar: "Eh, not so bad. Nice touch about the High King."
Ulfric: "Thank you, I thought so, too."
Galmar: "It's a foregone conclusion, you know."
Ulfric: "Oh, I know."
Galmar: "The Imperials aren't going to leave us alone. They still have camps in the hills. They'll continue to strike out at us, whenever and wherever they can.
Ulfric: "I'm not afraid of the remnants of the Legion, in time they'll all give up and go home. What I fear, is that the Thalmor will see our victory here and turn greater attention to our shores. We must be prepared to face them."
Galmar: "Aye."
Ulfric: (to the player) "And of course, we couldn't have done it without you. May the gods preserve you."
Galmar: "May the gods preserve us all."
Ulfric: "Come, Galmar. We've still much work to do."
Galmar will then follow Ulfric through the burning city, and both will return to Windhelm. You can ask Galmar what is next for him, and he will reveal that the war is far from over: "Heh. Ulfric's put me in charge of keeping an eye on the new Jarls. You know, make sure they're generally following orders. Can't say I'm looking forward to that. But, I'll also be training men and women for their new armies. The Empire might send over a few Legionnaires to make sure we're serious, and of course, we'll be taking the fight to the elves soon enough. We'll need trained, disciplined and creative warriors ready for all that." When asked if there's anything else you can do, he will encourage you to keep fighting the Legion: "No. I trust you'll do more good out there in the world, wherever you damn well please to go. You're a true son/daughter of Skyrim. You'll know what to do. To begin with, killing any Legionnaire you find out in the wilderness. I've reports they've hidden military camps out there."
Season Unending[edit]
When Esbern suggests that capturing a dragon in Dragonsreach may be the only way to get to Alduin, Jarl Balgruuf the Greater will be understandably hesitant if the civil war still rages. As a result, you will have to arrange a peace meeting between the Imperials and Stormcloaks in High Hrothgar, starting the quest Season Unending. When you have convinced Ulfric to show up, Galmar will comment: "I don't know how you convinced Ulfric to talk to the Empire. Worse than a waste of time if you ask me." He will then travel all the way to High Hrothgar and stand next to Ulfric at the negotiating table, commenting, "We should get started." and "When has any good ever come from talking to the Empire?"
As the meeting unfolds, he will occasionally make statements, depending on where the discussion goes:

After the negotiations, Galmar will walk alongside Ulfric down the 7000 steps and return to either the Palace of the Kings or one of the Stormcloak Camps, depending on your progress in the civil war quest line.
Battle for Windhelm[edit]
If you side with the Imperial Legion during the civil war, you will have no choice but to participate in the Battle for Windhelm alongside General Tulius and his second-in-command, Legate Rikke. After a long and exhausting battle in the streets of Windhelm, you will finally reach Palace of the Kings where you will find Ulfric and Galmar at their usual spots, ready to put up the final fight for their beliefs. A final confrontation is inevitable, and Galmar will prove that he is willing to sacrifice his own life to protect Ulfric:
Tullius: "Secure the door."
Rikke: "Already done, sir."
Tullius: "Ulfric Stormcloak! You are guilty of insurrection, murder of Imperial citizens, the assassination of King Torygg, and high treason against the Empire. It's over."
Galmar: "Not while I'm still breathing, it's not."
Rikke: "Step aside Galmar. We're here to accept Ulfric's surrender."
Ulfric: "I'll never surrender Skyrim into the hands of a corrupt and dying Empire."
Rikke: "Skyrim doesn't belong to you, Ulfric."
Ulfric: "No... But I belong to her."
Tullius: "Enough! You are traitors and will die traitors' deaths. Stand down and face public execution, or advance and face summary execution by my hands. It matters little to me. Either way I'll be sending your heads back to Cyrodiil."
Galmar: "Well? What are we waiting for?"
After the conversation, both Ulfric and Galmar will draw weapons; while Ulfric fights Tullius and Rikke, Galmar will go directly after you. Fortunately for Galmar, he will be dead before he gets to witness General Tullius execute Ulfric Stormcloak, ending the rebellion once and for all. If you have yet to finish the quest Sovngarde, you will then meet Galmar one last time, in the afterlife:
Sovngarde[edit]
If you sided with the Legion during the civil war, Galmar will be killed at the end of the quest line. However, if he is dead by the time you reach Sovngarde as part of the Main Quest, you will encounter him in the afterlife, sitting helpless on a rock in the mist outside the Hall of Valor, unable to find his way and seemingly scared of being consumed by Alduin. When you get near him he will tell you: "Dragonborn, even in death you dog my steps? How come you here? The king of this realm will cast you out - cursed be your name by all sons of Skyrim, with scorn unceasing." You can do nothing but leave him behind and proceed to fight Alduin so his soul can find rest in Sovngarde. When Alduin has been defeated, the mist will disappear from Sovngarde and Galmar will get up and walk towards the Hall of Valor and thank you sincerely for lifting the curse of the World-Eater: "In life we were enemies, but eternity's too long to hold a grudge - my heart's now free of such old hatreds. Hero of the Nords I name you, Dragonborn, let none deny it."

During the related quests, Galmar will have lots of conversations with Ulfric about the task at hand, but the two will also randomly discuss the war and potential allies:

Galmar: "Not a peep. Those prissy Bretons can't be made to lift a finger to help their neighbors."
Ulfric: "I suppose we shouldn't be surprised. They've never had many problems with the Empire."
Galmar: "Those milk drinkers? Might as well be elves. Think they're better than us."
Ulfric: "Regardless. It appears Skyrim must stand alone. Again."
Ulfric: "Calm yourself, Galmar. Save it for the battlefield."
Galmar: "Our men are getting massacred out there. Damn Imperials."
Ulfric: "We can't march on Solitude. Not yet. One thing at a time."
Galmar: "We need to move faster. Keep them off balance."
Ulfric: "It's working, Galmar. Our patience has won us friends and allies. And our armies are systematically taking care of the rest."

Unused Dialogue[edit]
In an earlier iteration of the Civil War Quests, you would take part in sieges in every city, rather than just Whiterun and Solitude/Windhelm. Two of these (Riften and Markarth) would involve similar exchanges between the Imperial and Stormcloak jarls.
If you liberated Markarth for the Stormcloaks, this dialogue would play between Galmar, Igmund, and Thongvor:
Thongvor: "Ready to listen to the Silver-Blood family now, Igmund?"
Igmund: "Thongvor. I should have executed your whole treacherous clan when I had the chance."
Thongvor: "Don't worry. We'll take good care of your city when you're gone. When Ulfric Stormcloak becomes High King, Skyrim will finally be the way my ancestors intended. It's a new day in Markarth."
Galmar: "Are you two quite done? You, go pack your things. And you, go sit on that damn chair and start acting like a Jarl."
Thongvor: "Come Galmar, we have much to do."
Igmund: "The Empire will return. Count on it."
In addition, there would be a scene where Galmar would confront the local Justiciar, Ondolemar:
Galmar: "Not so fast, Elf!"
Ondolemar: "I presume you're talking to me?"
Galmar: "On your knees!"
Ondolemar: (Ignores him)
Galmar: "I said on your knees, Elf!"
Ondolemar: "Enjoy this while you can. Soon you will all be slaves."
Galmar: "Raagh!" (Attacks and kills Ondolemar)
Galmar: "Someone get that thing out of here and burn it."
Although this scene was cut from the game, the results from it are still present as Ondolemar's belongings will wind up in a casket in Markarth's Hall of the Dead, implying that he dies shortly after the Stormcloaks take over Markarth.
If you were taking back Riften (either due to losing the city in a battle or as a result of Season Unending), this exchange between Laila, Maven, and Galmar would play (note this is the same dialogue that would play if you were taking the city of Markarth back for the Empire under the same circumstances):
Laila: "Ahhh... It's good to be home."
Maven: "Welcome back. I've left a few surprises for you to discover."
Laila: "How kind of you. And I've brought an army to give you a going away parade."
Galmar: "If you two are finished with the touching homecoming, there's a city in chaos out there."
Laila: "Indeed. Come, there is much to be done."

Bugs[edit]
- When you're fighting in Dragonsreach for the Battle of Whiterun, if you accidentally hit him, he will start attacking you, and will not say, "There's a burning city outside" to end the conversation between Vignar Gray-Mane and the Jarl, which makes the quest uncompletable. ?
- Paying your bounty in Windhelm will allow you to speak to Galmar.
- Galmar would not complete Joining the Stormcloaks properly if Season Unending was an active quest.
- The Official Skyrim Patch, version 1.4, fixes this bug.
- Despite default equipment of light armor and a two-handed weapon, he is part of the CombatWarrior1H class.
- The Unofficial Skyrim Patch, version 1.2.3, addresses this issue. It changes his class to CombatBarbarian to better suit his equipment.
- Once the Civil War is over, you should have been able to ask Galmar whether there will now be peace, to which he would reply: "Peace? When has any Nord ever known peace? Skyrim breeds warriors. It's who we are, it's in our blood. And that's as it should be. In the darkest days ahead, it'll be us Nords who lead the fight against the elves. It's only a matter of time before their pointy ears start itching to rule the world again. It'll be Skyrim that leads the charge. Mark my words. And that time around, mankind will either succeed once and for all or die trying." However, this dialogue was erroneously attributed to Ulfric, and therefore never recorded for Galmar. ?
