Jelkar is a Nord Vampire of the Quarra Clan.

The current incarnation of the Quarra is a shadow compared to the original clan founded by Volrina, but Jelkar is determined to bring the clan back to prominence in Skyrim; without resorting to the local clans' political games and hypocritical concepts of "honor". As the youngest member of the current Quarra leadership, what Jelkar lacks in age and experience, he makes up for with a brutal warrior spirit that rivals any proud Nord in the province.

Background[edit]

Jelkar was turned and inducted into the Quarra in the period of time between Volrina's death in the late-third era and the Red Year in the early-fourth era. Everything he knows about Volrina comes from stories told by the Quarra's surviving elders, and he tries his hardest to live up to her passion and fury. In the time since their evacuation to Solstheim and later moving to Skyrim at the invitation of Lord Harkon, Jelkar was chosen to be the new Clanlord among the younger members of the clan. Agrius turned down the position because of his age, and the other elders were content with their positions in the clan's operations.

When the Quarra arrived in Skyrim and moved into Pinemoon Cave, they received a visit from Vlkoslak, Broodfather of the Cronvangr Clan, the Volkihar's counterparts in the Old Holds of eastern Skyrim. Vlkoslak attempted to create an alliance with the newly arrived clan, but Jelkar was disgusted by the elder vampire's sense of superiority and talk of honor in secret killing, which reminded him of the Berne Clan. He drove Vlkoslak out of their lair and began a feud between the newly-arrived Quarra and one of the oldest vampire clans in the province, with no aid or interference from the Volkihar.

Dreams in Darkness[edit]

After completing the third and final dream sequence, you will awaken outside Cronvangr Cave with Vlkoslak, Velfred and Narina Evicus standing in front of you. Vlkoslak will launch into a speech about how your dreams have guided you to the entrance to Cronvangr Hall, and invite you to join his clan.

Jelkar will make his presence known after the speech, explaining that he spotted you sleepwalking and followed you to the cave, and insult Vlkoslak and the Cronvangr while making his own invitation to join the Quarra at Pinemoon Cave. If you travel to Pinemoon Cave in Haafingar, you will find Jelkar waiting outside to speak to you. He will offer additional information about the Quarra, Cronvangr, and reasons to join his clan instead. Once you have confirmed your allegiance to the Quarra, he will direct you inside to find the entrance to the Quarra Lair.

Joining the Quarra[edit]

Inside the Quarra Lair, Jelkar will direct you to introduce yourself to the rest of the clan's named members: Agrius Amnis, Haesmar, Aenar, Malielle Masoriane, and Rothis Dolovas. Once that is done, he will tell you to do some work for the clan while he puts the finishing touches on a plan to undermine the Cronvangr and support their own position in Skyrim. Once you have completed several radiant quests for the clan elders, Jelkar will tell you that he has learned about an artifact that Vlksolak would give anything to acquire.

The Bloodfire Amulet[edit]

Thanks to a letter sent by a scholar, Jelkar has learned the location of an artifact called the Bloodfire Amulet, an ancient symbol authority among the vampires of Skyrim. While he doesn't care about the necklace's symbolism or even its enchantment to protect the wearer from sunlight, he knows that Vlkoslak would be able to use it to restore some of the Cronvangr's lost influence and begin building alliances against the Quarra. To that end, he's sending you and Agrius to recover the amulet from Icebood Barrow while the rest of the clan distract the Cronvangr with strikes against their outposts and territory.

Upon your return, he will be impressed with your work and declare you are no longer a fledgling, but a full member of the Quarra Clan. You can also tell him about Rothis' attempt to kill you and claim the amulet for himself, but he will not be surprised and simply say you did the right thing by killing him.

A Spy in Solitude[edit]

When you speak to Jelkar to begin this quest, his usual confidence is replaced with concern. He has learned that a member of the Vampyrum Order has come to Skyrim in search of the Bloodfire Amulet. While the Quarra are not one to back down from a fight, they also know better than to challenge the sole vampire clan of Cyrodiil, who earned that title by destroying every last one of their rivals. This is why Jelkar wants you and Malielle to go to the Solitude catacombs, and kill this agent before they have a chance to report anything back to the order.

Once you've killed the agent and returned to Jelkar, he'll return to his normal confident self, clearly relieved that the Vampyrum won't be entering the conflict between the Quarra and Cronvangr.

Blood and Snow[edit]

Once you've completed more work for the elders, Jelkar will ask you to meet him in his private chambers. There, he will reveal to you that he knows the Quarra he leads are a pale shadow compared to the clan Volrina forged, and that your work has brought them closer to their predcessor's example than anything he has been able to accomplish. He will then tell you that it is time to bring the fight to the Cronvangr, and show Skyrim that the Quarra are here to stay.

While you and the clan elders deal with the Cronvangr leaders and the hall's guards, Jelkar will chase after Vlksolak and get locked in the Broodfather's chambers. Once you've wiped out Vlkoslak's council and recovered the key to his chambers from Velfred, you'll find Jelkar alive and injured outside the door to Vlkoslak's sanctum. He attacked the older vampire with everything he had, and it still wasn't enough to even scratch Vlkoslak, so he has to leave it up to you now. Once Vlkoslak is dead, return to Quarra Lair and speak to Jelkar in his private chambers; his personal pride is wounded after his battle, but that doesn't stop him from celebrating the victory over the Cronvangr with the rest of the Clan.

Notes[edit]

  • There is some discrepancy about Jelkar's age and when he became a vampire, as Agrius' dialogue suggests he wasn't even born before Volrina died, which would've been during the events of Morrowind or shortly after. By this logic, Jelkar would only have been ten years old at the time of the Red Year, when the clan evacuated Morrowind. A less literal interpretation is that Agrius meant that Jelkar was not "reborn" as a vampire before Volrina died, which fits better with the timeline.
